The Plantation neighborhood is a little safer thanks to the work of local residents Bill McDonald, Larry Deigert and several county departments.

The neighborhood which is just South of Okeechobee Boulevard east of Drexel Road has been plagued by drivers who at a high rate of speed cut through the streets making it unsafe for children to play.

With the help of the Office of Community Revitalization and the County Engineer's the neighborhood now has 14 speedhumps strategically placed throughout the community, that have made the streets safer.

In addition to the streets being safer, a badly lit alleyway that has been a magnet for crime has also been cleaned up. 

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office's Community Policing team and the Street Enforcement Team worked with residents and inmates to trim the trees, increasing the visibility in the alley and deterring crime.

Plantation is one of 84 neighborhoods in the county that receive services from the Countywide Community Revitalization Team (CCRT). The CCRT helps coordinate stabilization and revitalization activities in designated  neighborhoods that often face challenges relating to poverty and crime.

Forty-two, or half, of all the designated CCRT communities are located in Commissioner Weiss's district.

Expect to read more about these neighborhoods in the future as our office has stepped up outreach to the neighborhoods, to better understand their challenges, to support the community leaders in improving these areas and to showcase accomplishments.

Commissioner Weiss, County Engineer David Ricks and deputy County Engineer Tanya McConnell took questions from residents at the Cypress Lakes Community about the widening of Roebuck Road.

Residents have been frustrated with the lack of progress and wanted to hear from their County Commissioner who brought along the engineering staff to field questions.

Deputy County Engineer Tanya McConnell explained the bid process and detailed some unexpected issues the contractor encountered that have led to delays of this project that is slated for completion no later than April.

Residents complained about the noise, speeding trucks, and the faded striping on Haverhill Road.

These were valuable comments that prompted our office to take action.

Following the meeting the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has stepped up enforcement on Roebuck road to catch speeders.

The County Engineer's office is committed to re-striping critical sections of Haverhill Road.

Residents were made aware of a tree give away that can help with mitigating noise impacts.

At the February 11 and 25, 2020, Board of County Commissioners meetings, the board took the following action:

John Prince Park – directed staff to develop and present a written action plan for the assessment of homeless people living in John Prince Park.

Youth homelessness  – accepted a HUD Youth Homelessness Demonstration Grant agreement in an amount up to $147,970, to support development of a coordinated community plan to prevent and end youth homelessness in Palm Beach County. Two full-time equivalent grant-funded positions with a required 25-percent in-kind match of $36,993 were approved. These positions will be eliminated if federal funding is discontinued. No additional county funds are required.

Project Jacobson – approved a cash grant of up to $1.9 million over a 10-year period and an ad valorem tax exemption of up to $400,000 over a 10-year period for Project Jacobson. The company is considering locating a manufacturing facility in Belle Glade, investing $45.5 million to acquire approximately 85 acres of land and construct and equip a 140,000-square-foot facility. The project would create 200 new jobs at an annualized average wage of $38,000 and an annualized median wage of $33,000 over a five-year period. The estimated five-year economic impact is $272 million.

El Cid Apartments – Senior Affordable Housing: adopted a resolution approving the issuance of Housing Finance Authority of Palm Beach County multifamily housing revenue bonds in the amount of $17.5 million to finance the costs of acquiring, constructing, renovating and equipping a 72-unit multifamily rental housing facility known as El Cid Apartments, located at 315 Almeria Road in West Palm Beach. No county funds, its taxing power, faith or credit are involved.

HOME – approved five HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) awards totaling $2.55 million for loans to developers of affordable housing. These are federal grant funds that require a 25 percent local match provided by state SHIP grant funds: 1) $550,000 to build Flagler Station, a 94-unit multifamily rental project, including 10 HOME-assisted units in West Palm Beach; 2) $1 million to build Quiet Meadows, a 132-unit senior and disabled multifamily rental project, including 20 HOME-assisted units in Belle Glade; 3) $500,000 to build Heron Estates, a 79-unit townhome-style rental project, including 10 HOME-assisted units in Riviera Beach; 4) $185,000 to construct two HOME-assisted single-family homes located at 3974 Dale Road in Palm Springs; and 5) $315,672 to construct three HOME-assisted single-family homes in western Palm Beach County, one in Belle Glade and two in Pahokee.

LEED Certification – authorized the county’s participation in the 2020 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Cities and Communities grant program. The county was one of 20 local governments nationally selected based upon a demonstrated commitment to and leadership in resilience and sustainability. Commissioner Gregg Weiss and Dr. Jake Leech from the Office of Resilience will represent the county at a two-day LEED Certification workshop in Washington, D.C. in March. The county will then pursue LEED Certification through the grant program.

Legislative Agenda – approved the proposed 2020 federal legislative agenda to be lobbied during the upcoming 2020 federal legislative session in Washington. New agenda items include net neutrality, the Davis Bacon Act, coral reef protection and restoration, Lake Okeechobee operations, derelict vessels, Next Generation 911, opportunity zone designations with the US Treasury, veterans homelessness, the Mental Health Parity and Substance Use Disorder Act, e-rate and universal funding.

​The Native Canopy Education Program (NCEP) is a joint effort by the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management and the Cooperative Extension Service. NCEP will have informational booths at two upcoming public events.

Get a voucher* for free native trees and shrubs in 3-gallon containers and lots of free information on native plants, native edible fruits, and invasive plants. Take a few minutes to sit in the shade and "talk plants" with NCEP volunteers.
