Celebrating APSIA Students Worldwide
Black American National Security & Foreign Policy Next Generation Leaders
To celebrate and honor the African Americans in foreign policy, New America published a list of the next generation of leaders, including congressional staff, intelligence analysts, military veterans, diplomats, foreign aid practitioners, entrepreneurs, economists, and beyond.

The 35 experts in U.S. national security and foreign policy were selected for their excellence and leadership; their current work in national security or foreign policy; and their contributions to their issues of expertise through thought leadership. Among these experts are many APSIA school alumni.

Alumna Highlight: Makda Getachew

Makda Getachew is an alumna from the Master of Public Policy program at the Hertie School of Governance, where she focused on African Studies.

After graduating, Getachew moved back home to Ethiopia and worked for various organizations within the international development field, including the International Labour Organization, UN Economic Commission for Africa, Irish Aid, and most recently, for the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) in Ethiopia and Zambia. In this role, she is responsible for program development and management focusing on economic and social justice, socio-political analysis, and working with various local and international organizations.

Getachew credits the Hertie School for giving her strong policy analysis skills and
"the ability to dissect a sector, dissect an issue…from different points of view, the political economy of different actors, and seeing where change can happen.”

Member School Highlight:
Hertie
 School of Governance

A big welcome to our newest APSIA member school, The Hertie School of Governance! The Hertie School is a private university based in Berlin, accredited by the State and the German Science Council. Interdisciplinary and practice-oriented teaching, first-class research and an extensive international network set the Hertie School apart and position it as an ambassador of good governance, characterized by public debate and engagement. The School was founded at the end of 2003 as a project of the Hertie Foundation, which remains its major partner.

In September 2008, the School launched its second master’s program: the Executive Master of Public Management. The right to award doctorates was conferred to the Hertie School in September 2012 and the School launched a new, research-intensive doctoral program, the PhD in Governance, shortly thereafter.
