Helping growers solve labour problems
Chronic labour shortages are a common problem for many farmers who can’t access enough local workers to meet their needs.

The Australian Government has two Pacific labour mobility initiatives designed to help businesses address these issues – the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) and the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS).

Both initiatives enable employers to recruit workers from nine Pacific countries and Timor-Leste when there is not enough local labour available. Under the SWP, employers can recruit workers for unskilled roles for up to nine months, while the PLS allows businesses to employ staff in low-skilled and semi-skilled roles for between one and three years.

In the February edition of the Vine magazine, read how Duxton Dried Fruits recruited workers through the SWP to address its labour shortages and expand the business.

Preparing for drought

Growers can now access more than 100 risk management resources to help them prepare for drought through the FarmHub website.

The resources included in the Drought Preparedness e-Guide were developed by leading agriculture bodies and research and development corporations.

Delivered by the National Farmers’ Federation, FarmHub is a national directory of support and assistance measures tailor-made for farmers.

Mallee climate projections

Maximum and minimum daily temperatures will continue to increase in the Mallee region over this century according to a report by the Victorian Government and CSIRO.

Developed to help communities prepare for climate change, the Mallee Climate Projections 2019 report covers average and extreme temperature and rainfall, relative humidity and evaporation out to 2090 for moderate and high greenhouse gas emissions scenarios.
