Farewell to Dr Fouad Karouta - retiring ACT Node Manager.

RS Physics had a big week or farewells for Fouad, a morning tea with everyone from EME.  Speeches of farewell were given from A/Prof Patrick Kluth, Head of EME, and Professor Jagadish AC.

Finishing the week with a enjoyable afternoon of celebration hosted by ANFF. Thank you to all our wonderful users and friends who were able to attend the afternoon.
There were speeches from Prof Tim Senden, Director of RS Physic, who presented Fouad with a very special medallion, as he had such a long association with the school, as well as Professor Jagadish, who presented a farewell card and gift from donations.  Fouad gave his final RS Physics presentation, which was enjoyed by all.
Having completed a degree in Chemistry from the Lebanese University in Beirut, Fouad then went on to complete a PhD in Epitaxy and LEDs of InGaAsSb structures, at the Montpellier University in France (1986).

In 1987 he moved to The Netherlands, to become a post doc at Eindhoven University of Technology, in the Opto-electronic Devices Section, Department of Electrical Engineering. Fouad continued his affiliation with TU/e until 2009, having gained the title of Assistant Professor, when he was actively head hunted for the position of Node Manager at the Australian National University (ANU), owing to his experience with working in clean rooms.

Fouad first came to the ANU in 1995, and worked with future colleague and collaborator Prof Chennupati Jagadish, as a visiting fellow. This was Fouad, and his wife Fanny’s first real taste of Australia, which instilled in both an instant love of the Australian lifestyle, and the country.

Fouad and his wife Fanny then moved to the city of Canberra in late 2009, and began to build a new life within the ‘Bush Capital’ of Australia. Once there both pursued their passions respectively, for science and native Australian Flora, a unique combination nurtured by the city’s singular qualities. Having now lived and worked in the beautiful city of Canberra for 11 years with the ANFF, Fouad has felt the call of retirement, and maybe even a touch of wanderlust.

Thank you Fouad for your commitment to the ANFF, and we wish you every happiness in your well-earned retirement.

Hail storm at the ACT Node.

.As you are all aware ANU campus was hit severely by a hail storm Monday January 20. This resulted in big infrastructural damages to roofs and essentially to exhaust ducting and fans.
After assessment we may be able to put a few equipment back online. However equipment requiring exhaust like our ICPs, PECVD, ALD, Barrel etcher, MOCVD, etc. will not be available till exhaust ducts/fans are fixed. Unfortunately this may take several weeks.

Fouad Karouta - ACT Node
24 January 2020.

8 weeks after the first ACT Node’s notice to our users, concerning the damage caused by the hail storm that swept through the ANU campus and other parts of Canberra, we are happy to report that most of our systems are back up and running.

A few of our tools are still down, waiting for integral parts that have been ordered to be delivered and replaced.

The hail storm adversely affected the entire ANU community, resulting in the closure of the campus in the days following the storm, with some buildings like University House still indefinitely closed until 2021. Happily the ACT Node hasn’t been left with too much residual damage from the freak hail storm, and will be operating at usual capacity very soon.
