Billie!  Backstage with Lady Day

February 28
March 7

"BILLIE! BACKSTAGE WITH LADY DAY" is a one woman show about Billie Holiday that takes you back to an era where the joints were jumping, bands were swinging and Hollywood was hopping.  It was a time where glitz and glamour ruled and class was where ladies were dainty and gentlemen were smooth; where gowns flowed and hats topped short cropped hair.

This musically haunting, sad, happy, unpredictable journey of jazz/blues singer, Billie Holiday, takes you on a winding road of love, joy, blues, racism and astounding hit songs that tell the story of a life hard fought.  The road takes you to places and people in Billie's life that provided both pain and pleasure, excitement and disappointments.  Billie Holiday's turbulent life has been able to bring a new level of emotion and respect to music and inspiration to musicians and vocalists all over the world.

And the Beat Goes On

March 2

A comedic cabaret about trying to hit the right notes. Parodies and original songs accompanied by a 3 piece band tell the journey of a mature nurse and her struggles with her profession and her life. Many years ago she became a registered nurse that instead of being a career, ended up being a sentence. She hears songs in her head and has always used music as a coping mechanism.

A journey of a difficult childhood coupled with wrong choices and unfortunate events led to anxiety and depression. Although she made many attempts to improve her life over time, ( in 1988 she walked barefoot on burning coals with Tony Robbins) she hit the spiritual equivalent of "rock bottom" last year when a physical illness came upon her and presented the last straw. Yet this is a comedy and there is a happy ending. Learn how she had to lose her mind to become a different person.

Love to Sing? Join the San Fernando Valley Chorale!

March 3 Ongoing

Love to sing? The San Fernando Valley Chorale offers a unique opportunity to sing and perform with a well established and highly regarded community chorale. Beginning February 11, we rehearse each Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church, 10000 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, CA 91345.

New singers are welcome to join us as we launch a new season of singing, collaborative learning, camaraderie and fun. “We are a very social group - we love everybody,” says longtime director, Conrad Immel, who carefully selects original and crowd-pleasing music from both popular and classical works. Past performances have included show tunes from "The Music Man," "Man of LaMancha," and "Carousel;" classical pieces from Bach, Brahms and more, as well as spiritual, rock n' roll, jazz, and country. No audition is necessary, just a love of music and a willingness to share your gift of singing and make new friends.

The Chorale, a non-profit,  non-sectarian group of men and women singers, performs two concerts annually - in the winter and spring.  Dues are required each semester to cover Chorale expenses, with some scholarships available. Chorale members and guests enjoy socializing at a potluck each season. Check us out on the web:  www.sfvchorale.blogspot.com or www.facebook.com/sfvchorale. Plot Summary: Elwood P. Dowd insists on including his friend Harvey in all of his sister Veta’s social gatherings. Trouble is, Harvey is an imaginary six-and-a-half-foot-tall rabbit. To avoid future embarrassment for her family—and especially for her daughter, Myrtle Mae—Veta decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. At the sanitarium, a frantic Veta explains to the staff that her years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey also, and so the doctors mistakenly commit her instead of her mild-mannered brother. The truth comes out, however; Veta is freed, and the search is on for Elwood, who eventually arrives at the sanitarium of his own volition, looking for Harvey. But it seems that Elwood and his invisible companion have had a strange influence on more than one of the doctors. Only at the end does Veta realize that maybe Harvey isn’t so bad after all.

For More Information: call Beth Eslick, Producer, at 805-377-3303.

Character Breakdown:
Elwood P. Dowd - 40-50 Everybody’s pal. Kind, gentle, sweet, charming, charismatic. Equally at home in a sawdust on the floor tavern, a sewing circle, or a 4-year old’s birthday party. A good listener and a brazen humanist. Beloved though he is, there is something haunted and ethereal about him, which strangely only serves to make him more likable. Lonely. Drinks too much. His best friend and platonic life partner is a six-and-a-half-foot tall rabbit only he can see.

Veta Louise Simmons - 40-50 A proper and well-respected, old money society matron. Constantly embarrassed by her brother Elwood and his best buddy, the invisible rabbit Harvey, who she also sees sometimes but also no, she does not, because good society ladies don’t see giant invisible rabbits. Exhausted from a lifetime of camouflage and sanding down her edges to fit in that round hole. Also, she’s a woman, and it’s the 1940s. About to snap.

Dr. William B. Chumley - 60-80 Has seen a lot of mental illness in his many years of selfless toil and has plenty of money to show for it. Crusty, but likes to think of himself as intellectually nimble. Respected by his peers, revered by his patients, celebrated by his community. Blessed by the certainty that he has never been seriously wrong in his life ... but something is missing regardless. What do you get for the man who knows everything? The opportunity to be experience wonder...

Dr. Lyman Sanderson - 30-45 Young. Arrogant. Probably handsome, but who cares? He’s such a jerk. Career-focused to a maniacal degree. Wants to be Dr. Chumley someday but does not have Dr. Chumley’s humanity. Spends a lot of time hitting on nurses, especially Nurse Kelly, with whom he has a pretty grotesque love/hate relationship (chemistry with that actress is important). The kind of guy who doesn’t tip except when he’s on a date, when he way over tips. You know the kind.

Nurse Ruth Kelly - 25-30 Brighter than she comes across, but society has taught her that her only value lies in marrying a doctor and giving him children, so that’s mostly what she’s interested in. Besides covering her light under a bushel, she spends a lot of time trying to decide if she’s disgusted by or attracted to Dr. Sanderson. It’s a little bit of both, and the two are intertwined, and it’s really dysfunctional, but also might be very funny, which is why the chemistry with him needs to be incendiary.

Duane Wilson - 30-50 An orderly at the mental hospital who should probably be a patient himself. Mean, craven, a bit of a sadist. It is implied that he may take liberties with female patients. Probably quite powerless in his life outside the hospital. Sees the patients as less than human. Not an uncommon perspective for his time, but still deeply unfortunate, as it allows him to justify his rotten behavior.

Myrtle Mae Simmons - 18-21 Veta’s daughter. Unmarried. Veta probably cannot WAIT to be rid of her. Spoiled and vituperative. Cries and yells when she doesn’t get her way. Veruca Salt would find her over the top. Fears social humiliation more than anything, and for this reason, is probably the only person in the play who actually hates Elwood.

EJ Lofgren - 50-70 Can be played by a man or a woman. In their own eyes, the last honest human being. Been driving a cab so long they’ve got pedals instead of shoes. Has seen everything and knows people inside and out. Like Elwood, a decent person and a brazen humanist. They only have one scene, but it’s a doozy.

Judge Omar Gaffney - 60-80 What Dr. Chumley is to psychiatric medicine, Judge Gaffney is to the law. Respected, civilized, wealthy, powerful. Knows he’s always right. Saddled, unfortunately, with the need to protect the Dowd/Simmons family, and frankly does not have much patience for any of them.

Betty Chumley - 60-80 Dr. Chumley’s wife. Good-hearted, spirited, if a bit vacant. Perhaps a little annoyed at her husband’s constant need to work. When is he ever going to retire?

Ethel Chauvenet - 60-80 An older woman of the Dowd-Simmons’s social class. Nice enough but has a limited imagination. Has a grandson of marriageable age, which makes her of great interest to Veta and Myrtle.

Mrs. Johnson/Mr. Johnson - the maid/butler They’ve seen enough to know they’ve seen too much.

Adult Literacy Class

March 4 Ongoing

More than 30 million adults in the United States cannot read, write, or do basic math above a third-grade level. — ProLiteracy

Children whose parents have low literacy levels have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves. These children are more likely to get poor grades, display behavioral problems, have high absentee rates, repeat school years, or drop out. — National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)

75 percent of state prison inmates did not complete high school or can be classified as low literate. — Rand Report: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Correctional Education

Low literacy is said to be connected to over $230 billion a year in health care costs because almost half of Americans cannot read well enough to comprehend health information, incurring higher costs. — American Journal of Public Health

Plus we have lots of other great programs - help for Primary Progressive Aphasia patients and their caregivers, poetry workshops, story reader Arnold Weiss, a monthly produce exchange, a mystery book club, and much much more.

Estate Planning & Elder Law

Introduction to Maria Primushko

Ongoing

Hello Suddenly 65 Community,

My name is Maria Primushko and I am in the business of ‘Providing Peace of Mind’, more specifically I am a seasoned Estate Planning Attorney with a special interest in Elder Law and Estate Planning.  I am also pleased to inform you that I am now also the editorial contributor in this specific segment of Elder Law in your weekly Suddenly65 Newsletter.

Every month, starting today, you can read about tips and points of interest related to wills, trusts, probate and how to avoid it, how Medi-Cal may affect your estate plan, protection against elder abuse and so much more.  I will also be answering your concerns.  You could say that I am your ‘Dear Abby’ at Suddenly65 in the space of everything related to Elder Law and Estate Planning Law, exclusively.  All your communication shared with me is strictly confidential.  I will answer as many questions as possible and even provide complimentary telephonic consultations or in person if your questions deem it necessary.  If you would like to share your online responses with your fellow readers under my segment, please do so as I believe ‘sharing is caring’ – but this will always be with your written consent only.  Feel free to send to me at dearmaria@mvplawgroupla.com.

So, here is a little about me, who I am and what I do:
Since the seventh grade, I knew that I was destined to become an attorney because of my conviction to protect people. I began my legal career at the District Attorney’s office in St. Petersburg, Russia after having graduated from St. Petersburg State University with a bachelor’s degree in Jurisprudence in 1999.  I moved to the USA shortly after and obtained my Juris Doctor’s law degree from the University of West Los Angeles School in 2006. Despite having had to navigate the complexities of living in a new country while caring for my first newborn baby, I passed the California Bar Exam - one of the most challenging in America - on my first attempt, in 2007. I went on to work at CT Corporation in Los Angeles, where I learned the fundamentals of business entities formation, management and procedures. After obtaining my license, I worked at the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office and volunteered at Public Counsel before establishing my legal practice.

However, the stereotypical ‘attorney temperament’ does not define me.  Instead, I have an unapologetic fervor for safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our community, particularly the elderly as well as children and adults with special needs, who are often susceptible to neglect and financial abuse.

I openly lament the impassive and reactive attitude that society has towards Estate Planning and Legacy Preservation.  As a seasoned speaker on this discipline of law and a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys, I believe that procrastination stems from both ignorance and avoidance to address what is considered an uncomfortable and overwhelming issue. I have made it my personal quest to educate people about the negative impacts of not having an Estate Plan or not renewing an outdated Will or Trust, and often present real-life examples to emphasize my message at my educational seminars.  On that point, don’t forget to look out for one of my free seminars, which are held at various Senior Centers and academic venues, commencing this month and which will be on the Suddenly65.com calendar.  Feel free to send me your details if you would like to be invited or send you a personal reminder to future events.

What about me the human and not the attorney, might you ask?  I am the proud mom of 2 daughters and one son, and I am happily married! I like to celebrate my life by spending quality time with my family as well as horse-riding in my spare time.
