Announcing Our Volunteer Recognition Night Guest Speaker: Paul Rosen
“To make your dreams come true, the first thing you have to do is open your eyes.” - Paul Rosen
After decades of overcoming physical challenges, surgeries, and chronic pain, Paul Rosen’s leg was amputated in 1999. The procedure could’ve ended Paul’s life. Instead, Paul will tell you that 1999 was the year he really started to live.

A decorated three-time Paralympian and Gold Medalist, Paul is a respected disability advocate, and the definition of a Canadian hero.

Hear Paul as he delivers his story of courage and perseverance, radiating his zest for life, and his personal mantra: “To make your dreams come true, the first thing you have to do is open your eyes.”

Accreditation Success for Our Hospice Program
We're delighted to announce that Circle of Care has successfully passed accreditation by the HPCO (Hospice Palliative Care Ontario).

Achieving accreditation involved an intensive preparation process, and many months of hard work. A special thank you to Lana Rottenberg and Janet Chippin for assisting with client/caregiver phone surveys, to Sally Gustin for speaking with the reviewer about her experience as a hospice volunteer, and to all our wonderful hospice volunteers whose work with clients supported us in achieving this honour.

By passing our accreditation, we signify our compliance with hospice industry standards and indicate that we have been rigorously reviewed on our overall performance by industry peers.
Protect Yourself and Your Clients from COVID-19
While we are always aware of the need to protect ourselves and our clients from the spread of diseases and to ensure we practice good hand hygiene, the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has brought this to the forefront.

At Circle of Care we have been very cautious and have worked to ensure that clients, staff and volunteers have been protected. We are continuing to do our due diligence and remain in contact with our community partners and clients to ensure your safety.

How to protect yourself and others
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly, including between your fingers, under your fingernails and your wrists. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Cover your cough or sneeze using a tissue or into your elbow or sleeve, being sure to cover your mouth. Put used tissue in the garbage and wash your hands after or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • If you are sick, stay home from work or school until your symptoms resolve, postpone visiting your clients
  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing
  • As a volunteer who is visiting clients in their home, always call your client prior to visiting to ensure your are not displaying any flu like symptoms

Reminder: Monthly Hours are Due
March 31 is the end of our 2019/2020 fiscal year. It is at this time that we are required to report our volunteer hours to our funders to let them know that the services they are funding are being delivered and we are reaching our targets. Tracking monthly hours also allows us to measure the incredible impact that our volunteers have in the community!

What volunteers programs are monthly hour forms needed from?
We ask that all Friendly Visiting, Phone Pal and Hospice volunteers to please submit their hours. Our staff will email and call volunteers who have not submitted hours.

For volunteers in all other programs, program staff will submit your hours on your behalf.

When are my monthly hours due?
The deadline to submit all your monthly hours is the first week of April.

Why is it important that I submit my hours?
To monitor the wellbeing of our clients, we read all your reports and follow up on any concerns. It is important that we ensure our clients are receiving the services they are promised. Recently, we were trying to follow up with a volunteer on missing monthly hours and we learned that the volunteer had decided to stop visiting the client, but hadn't informed us. The reason we caught this oversight was because we were following up on their volunteer hours.

Thank you for your assistance. We appreciate the time that you spend providing volunteer support to our clients!
