What We've Been Up to!

Art Starts Presents: The Queen of Colour

Discover the meaning of colours through the eyes of Jacquie Comrie. Filmmaker Cuauhtémoc Velázquez takes us on Jacquie's journey to navigate colour, mental health and the impact of her work locally and internationally.

This mini-documentary was produced by Julián Carvajal and funded by the Canada Council for the Arts as part of The Colour Wheel Project - The Queen and Her Inner Battles.

The Queen of Colour. Documentary by Allen Agostino (2020).

Todmorden Mills Exhibition

The Art Starts' Ghosts of Todmorden Mills Exhibition showcased the work of three lead artists and ten youth artists at the historic site of Todmorden Mills from December 18th, 2019 - January 5th, 2020.

The spooky works of art incorporated costume design, poetry, photography, and photo manipulation. The opening night alone brought in over 100 attendees to view the works and engage with the artists.

CALL TO ARTISTS: Leslie Nymark Public Art Project

Calling artists! Be a part of an exciting public art project in the Leslie Nymark community. Art Starts and the STEPS Initiative are looking for artists or artist collectives, with experience in public presentations or exhibitions, to apply.

The selected artist or collective will be working closely with the community to create a shared vision for the artistic use of the public space. This project represents a return home for many Villaways residents, and the new public artwork is to be reflective of the character, qualities and history of the community.

The deadline to apply is March 27th.
