David Corcio

Where did work before you came to CESMII?
I’ve held several positions of different capacities at a variety of industries. Most recently, I was working as an Accounting supervisor at a confectionary manufacturer in Azusa. Before that, I worked as an operations manager at an engineering company, and before that, a production manager at a 3M distributor. All my various management positions have helped me form a well-rounded management capacity that I have brought to our membership team and has helped us be very successful in obtaining and retaining members.
What project(s) at UCLA/CESMII have you worked on that you are most proud of?
I am most proud of the foreign entity summary approval process that has been implemented. Prior to my ownership of the approval process, there was no set of procedures for the DOE to approve foreign entity companies joining our institute. I led the efforts to work with the DOE to produce an approval process that spells out all the possible deterrents for foreign entities that join our institute, as well as the steps they will take to ensure that their IP protection protocols are set in place and will be enforced.
What’s your favorite aspect of your role at CESMII and why?
I enjoy attending industry conferences and promoting the institute to new prospective members. I enjoy traveling to new cities and being able to explain to people what smart manufacturing is and how our institute is doing its part to help make US manufacturing more competitive on the overall global scale.
What was the most interesting thing you have learned this past year?
Perhaps the most interesting thing that I have learned this past year is that networking is the key to everything. Sometimes, certain “doors” are only opened by a specific set of individuals, and by networking and getting yourself out there, you may find yourself being introduced to someone that has an answer to your very specific problem. They may assist you in a very particular way that you may not have even thought of had you not had exposure to them. Therefore, its always a good idea to put on the charm, be polite, courteous, friendly, and helpful to others because you never know whom you will meet. There may be a possibility that the person you help with something small may end up helping you out with something big.
If you could learn anything new what would that be?
I would like to learn the trade of an automotive mechanic. I have always been interested in classic cars and would love to one day have father-son project to work on with my sons, fixing up and restoring an old 50’s car.
What’s one ‘fun fact’ about you that not many people know?
I am actually ambidextrous; I was born left-handed, but my mom didn’t want me to have a hard time later in life, so she taught me to do most things with my right hand (write, use a spoon, play the guitar, etc.) In fact, I didn’t even know that there were left-handed baseball gloves until I was in my teens. However, I still swing a baseball bat in the left-handed stance, same with golf, and I play tennis with the racquet in my left hand.

OIT's Mobile and Web Strategy group received national attention

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs featured OIT's Mobile and Web Strategy group's mobile app, CoachToFit, that helps obese veterans with serious mental illnesses (SMI) lose weight and live healthy lifestyles.

The department included the app's development and success in their January publication.

CoachToFit users benefit from educational modules that cover nutrition and activity, implement knowledge checks of learning, set and track weekly goals, and send reminders. The app also provides weekly coaching calls from peer specialists who are veterans with lived experience with SMI.

Rose Rocchio article: Up Your Game: Build a Data-Driven App with UCLA’s ZAP

UCLA mobile app's interfaces
Rose Rocchio published an article in the UC Tech blog about UCLA's new Zenith App Platform (ZAP).

Using ZAP, UC organizations can create the mobile environment that works best for them and their audiences – without doing any coding themselves!

Mobile apps offer many features that mobile friendly websites cannot. A mobile app can provide GPS navigation, personal reminders, and can automatically integrate the user's phone, camera, media, and calendar applications.

Campus organizations such as UCLA Neurosurgery, UCLA Psych, UCLA Health, and UCLA mobile already found success with the pilot app project.

Privacy and Its Big Brother #internet50

Kent Wada published an article on the UC IT Blog about data privacy.

Wada asserted that "you are your data". With the advancement of technology and data collection, decisions can be made about us solely based on our data. Artificial intelligence could score your job interview performance based on your facial movements and patterns of speech. A criminal sentencing AI could display your likelihood of criminal activity during a court trial.

Our expansive use of digital technology makes this possible.  "Each time we search for something, pay for something, indulge in some cat videos, take a walk, take a drive, or say something in our smart homes, we add to the record … our record." said Wada.
