Black Lives Matter Week at JSIS

To celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s work and “Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, the students at John Stanford studied about leaders of color from our past, present, and future.

Kindergarten classes chose Dr. Martin Luther King, 1st grade Langston Hughes, 2nd grade Faith Ringgold, 3rd grade Maya Angelou, 4th grade Beyoncé & Kendrick Lamar, and 5th grade students studied about our school’s namesake John Stanford.

As a culminating project, the students used art forms to show who each leader was, and the students walked around the school to learn about the leaders each grade studied. Both English and partner languages (Spanish and Japanese) were used for all presentations!

Students from 5 African Countries Visit IB History Classes at Ingraham

Students in two IB history classes at Ingraham had the opportunity to discuss U.S. history, current politics (impeachment), and international relations with a group of college students from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Mali. The visiting students were part of the Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs), a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational Affairs. FIUTS hosted the group and facilitated the visit.

SUSI programs promote a better understanding of the people, institutions, and culture of the United States among international students, teachers, and scholars. Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) are short-term academic programs for groups of undergraduate leaders, educators, and scholars from around the world. Hosted by academic institutions throughout the United States, these 5- to 6-week Institutes include an intensive academic residency and an integrated educational study tour. Extracurricular cultural and community activities help to broaden the participants’ understanding of U.S. society. See more at: http://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/study-us-institutes
