Hello, State Hornet readers.

Here's a roundup of what you may have missed in Sacramento State news between last week and today:

1. 'Every team I've played on, I've been the only African American player'

In honor of Black History Month, The State Hornet sat down with baseball player Isaiah Parker, softball player Lewa Day and basketball player Brandon Davis to talk about their experiences growing up as Black athletes. Click here to read more. 

2. Men who escorted associate professor out of Calaveras Hall identified as university officials

The two men who escorted Sac State computer science associate professor Weide Chang out of Calaveras Hall Wednesday were identified as university administrators, according to an email from University Communications.

Sac State computer science major Kaleb Bello said he was walking behind Chang into Calaveras Hall — where the CSC137 class is located — when he saw two men waiting for the associate professor. 

“They kind of just held him by the shoulders and escorted him down the hall,” Bello said.

3. Sac State suspends study abroad program in South Korea due to coronavirus

Sac State suspended all study abroad programs in South Korea Wednesday evening due to the 2019 novel coronavirus’s spread there, according to a press release sent out by University Communications.

Seven Sac State students are currently studying abroad in South Korea according to Paul Hofmann, associate vice president for International Programs and Global Engagement.

The Los Rios Community College District reported Thursday that three students had exposure to a person who contracted the novel coronavirus.

4. CRIME MAP: Missing person report filed and robbery reported at Sac State

During the week of Feb. 14, there were 13 crimes reported in the Sac State Police Department’s crime log.

A missing person report was filed for Joshua Beckwith. The Sac State Police Department has not responded to a request for comment. 

Additionally, a reported robbery by knifepoint led the police to issue a timely warning notification Wednesday and five thefts involving bicycles or skateboards were reported.

5. NEWS BROADCAST: Voting, baseball and hit-and-runs

The State Hornet is bringing biweekly broadcasts to Sac State. Our second broadcast includes students’ thoughts on what voting means to them, hit-and-runs on campus and Sac State baseball player Parker Brahms’ strikeout record.

6. Sac State baseball team sweeps 4-game series from Milwaukee

The Sac State baseball team bounced back from an opening weekend series loss with a four-game sweep of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee at John Smith Field.

The Hornets (5-2) defeated the Panthers (1-7) in convincing fashion over the weekend, outscoring Milwaukee 24-6 from Thursday to Sunday.

Senior pitcher Parker Brahms cemented himself in the school record books Friday night as he broke the program strikeout record and now sits alone at the top with 280 total.
