MAKER JOURNAL

vol.27 // Friday, February 28th

Hello!

First off, we are SO EXCITED for Monday since we're finally launching our Rome Collection in our 14-30 size range! We hit a few snags in our schedule while our patternmaker was moving back to Montreal, but we're finding our groove again and are extremely happy to have Rome ready in time for the warm months to come. Check your inboxes Monday morning for all the details ;)

In other news, I'll be back in London this June for my annual jean-making workshops at the New Craft House the weekends of the 14th and 20th. If you're in the neighborhood and want to make beautiful jeans in fun company with lots of hands-on fitting and construction help from yours truly, join us!

Meanwhile, I've spent the better part of the new year quilting. I finally resolved to finish my first half square triangle quilt (pictured above) and just need to assemble the back before I can send it off to be professionally quilted. It's made from a variety of Kaufman Essex linens, and I can't wait to switch out my beleaguered duvet for this beauty when it's all finished. I'm also working on a beautiful quilted jacket that I think will get a lot of wear once it's time to hang up the parka (so, like, May, if Montreal winters are anything to be believed).

We're also working on a MASSIVE web redesign which has been occupying most of my time lately. With over 8 years of content (and more than 700 blog posts!) we're hoping it will be much easier to search and browse to find all the tutorials we've created over the years. I spent 14 hours yesterday recategorizing all our content, and it's been a wild ride wading through all that sewing history - can't wait to show you the results of our hard work once it's ready this spring!

Happy making!
Heather Lou

Sewing ...
Love this black denim Axis Dress by Zoubis Zoubisou; so sleek and modern!

The Sewicialists are doing a denim month and scraps take on a second life with Sewstainability's scrappy denim chore jacket.

We love the Cutting Classes autopsies of designer garments. This one on a quilted jacket by Craig Green has a lot of good info.

Go check out what Crafting a Rainbow is calling her "most worn garment of the season". Spoiler alert: It looks very cozy!

The Bright Blooms made the most lovely Wilder Gown out of hand-woven fabric from Loom and Stars; so special!

I got a lot of inspiration from this rags to riches sewing journey on Jasikastrycurious blog. Sometimes, you just have to push through and make the best of it!

The Future of Sewing...

We got a shout out in this article from the San Diego Union-Tribune about the growing home sewing industry and the dying fabric store industry in San Diego.

Have you ever wanted to sew an Alexander McQueen dress? Sarah Burton has made a dress from the SS2020 collection available for download. I'm kind of shocked there are only 18 pieces!

Such a great idea! FeelGood Fibers is making de-stashing that much easier; a buy and sell website for extra pieces you are ready to part with.

The revolution of paperless sewing is upon us! Little Ragamuffin has some interesting ideas to share about sewing with projectors.

This company out of Bristol is making farm to (sewing) table fabrics and they are GORGEOUS.

This is a great article from The Lily on millenials and the home sewing movement.

Watching ...

If you love Wes Anderson like we do you will be STOKED that this is on the horizon.

If you haven't watched Next in Fashion on Netflix yet, you should. I almost had a sympathy panic attack when they had to make a suit in a day (Hot take: this is basically impossible to do well).

There must be a lot of cross over between sewing and home renovations because we've been addicted to a couple HGTV shows this winter. Studio favourites: Home Town and  Restored by the Fords. Leanne Ford is a design force and her "young Diane Keaton vibes" and wardrobe are nothing short of aspirational (I have so many Kalle Shirtdress hacking ideas because of her!)

... CLOSET CASE MAKES ...
Katie Kortman made the most beautiful organza Cielo top for Valentine's Day with hand-sewn leather hearts. Go check out her blog post for a closer look. Also, what an enviable plant sanctuary!
GET CIELO TOP
This is the prettiest hand-dyed Charlie Caftan from Caroline. Not too shabby a backdrop!
GET PATTERN
Wellies, a country road and a woolly Jasika Blazer! Erica here is really doing everything right.

... HACK YOUR SEWING ...
Needle Life Meter! Put partially used machine needles back in the case. Using a sharpie, draw a line on the case over the needle in proportion to approximately how much of its "life" has been used. (Line covers 1/4 of the needle if it has about 3/4 of its life left). Update the "meter" by extending the line. When the needle is no longer useable, it should be fully covered with sharpie.
