DUG Network
March Urban Gardener Newsletter

Hello Gardeners!

If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time welcome!

We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Check Out The DUG Network Resource Website

DUG Network also has an amazing website promoting over 500 different urban Ag, food security and environmental organizations and resources operating in the greater DC area.

Need Help Promoting an Event or Resource?

If you know of any garden, food and environmental events or opportunities that the community should know about, please email us the details (you can just respond to this e-mail) to include in the next newsletter.

Need Help Bringing this Newsletter Beyond the Computer

In addition, we need your help to bring awareness to all these amazing resources to all people in DC regardless if they have access to a computer or not.  We're looking for people or organizations that can help us print and post this newsletter so people without regular computer access can see these reources.  If you can help us print this newsletter and post it in any public place( libraries, community centers, coffee shops, barber shops, etc) please let us know.

Leveraging Juvenile Justice Food Environments to Advance Health Equity
Thu, Mar 19, 2020 11:00 AM
This webinar shares new research from ChangeLab Solutions and RTI International on the policies and practices shaping food environments in residential juvenile justice facilities — and how those policies and practices might address diet-related health inequities. The research reflects both a national review as well as a sample of facilities in North Carolina.

MappingSegregationDC is a resource for historians, activists, educators, students, and journalists, and provides essential context for conversations around race and gentrification in DC.

  • The Displacement of Meridian Hill's African American Community tells the stories of the approximately 40 families forced out of their homes in 1912 for the development of Meridian Hill Park. This story map also tracks the families to their new homes, mostly closer to downtown DC.
  • The Legacy of Racial Covenants, 1940-2010 uses Census data to illustrate the impact of restrictive deed covenants on DC's shifting, yet persistently segregated, racial landscape.
  • How the Federal Housing Administration Shaped DC features a 1937 federal government map that grades all sections of DC, and its suburbs, using race as a criterion. It also illustrates the government's role in subsidizing whites-only housing around DC, and the influence of lending policies on where apartments were built for white and black residents.
  • DC’s Segregated Recreation System, 1948 provides a snapshot of playgrounds, swimming pools, and other recreation facilities during a year when the system was in upheaval. This was the same year that the Supreme Court ruled racial housing covenants unenforceable, but the city continued to resist the federal government's efforts to desegregate recreation. This map sorts out which facilities were officially segregated, which were open to all, and which fell somewhere in between.

School of the Woods
2020 Summer Week Long Wilderness School Sessions
North American Bushcraft School
1435 Providence Church Rd, Hedgesville, West Virginia 25427
Learning to appreciate Mother Nature and all the beautiful things in our forests is the goal and focus for all School of the woods activities.  Campers will learn about the technologies and tools Native Americans and early frontier people utilized daily to produce food, shelter, water, music and thrive off of the land. All activities are designed for the group to begin and end together, no one is first or last; we do every thing as a team. We keep our staff to student ratio very low to insure one on one time for all campers. By the end of the week all campers can expect to have created several crafts such as their own wooden spoon, bowl, Obsidian arrow point, natural cordage, bow and drill fire kit, buckskin leather bag and a basket made from native materials.

Soil Management for Community Trees
Mar 25, 2020 10:00 am
Tree health and risk is heavily influenced by the health and quality of the soil surrounding it. Soil provides trees with essential nutrients, water, support, gas exchange, and more, but these services are limited when, for example, soil is compromised through pollution, compaction, and limited root volume. In this webinar, you will learn about the biological and arboricultural basis for managing soils of community trees, including understanding spacing between trees, canopy gap openings, water harvesting into soil below pavement, protection during construction, and recommended soil volumes.

2020 Arcadia Summer Youth Farm Camps Registration Opens Jan 21
Arcadia Farms - 9000 Richmond Highway Alexandria, VA 22309
Know a budding farmer or an aspiring entomologist between the ages of 6 and 11? You're in luck! Head over to the Farm Camp page to learn more about the various sessions and for answer to some FAQs. Each week-long Farm Camp session has its own focused theme. This year's schedule and theme are:

  • Eco Explorers: July 6-10 - Your little animal lover or critter extraordinaire will want to join us during this week. Eco Explorers campers will learn about all of the fascinating creatures that play a role in our farm ecosystem: pests, pollinators, worms, chickens, fungi, birds, and more!
  • Creative Sprouts: July 13-17 - When your campers aren't busy planting or tasting, they will be creating! Your little Sprouts will be inspired by nature and will create beautiful projects and unique recipes. Learning about gardening and food is so much more fun when you get to create with the ingredients!
  • Farm Foodies: Week 1 July 20-24 - Calling all foodies! Campers will spend the week harvesting, washing, grating, peeling, chopping, mixing and best of all – tasting! Your Farm Foodies will learn to become comfortable with following recipes and using kitchen utensils when they're not having fun on the farm!
  • Farm Foodies: Week 2 July 27-31 - This week is identical to the Farm Foodies Wk 1 listed above. It's simply another chance for many interested kids to explore cooking from the vantage point of a farm! If you are interested in the Farm Foodies themed week, we suggest that you choose just one because the activities will be almost identical from Farm Foodies Wk 1 to Farm Foodies Wk 2.
  • Young Farmers: August 3-7 - Does your child enjoy getting their hands in the soil and growing something delicious? Do they have a love for the environment? Then send your budding farmer to Farm Camp during this week. We’ll learn how to grow healthy food – from seed to harvest--and practice sustainable farming practices (no chemicals!).

In addition, our markets feature kids’ cooking activities, recipe samples, and chef-led culinary demonstrations, designed to get children excited about healthy eating and cooking. To volunteer please create an account here on our Volunteerhub website. After creating an account, you should be able to see all of our upcoming shifts for the next three months in a calendar view format. DC’s First Food Runner Program "Food Rescue US"
One of the biggest barriers to donating food is transportation. Food Rescue, a national food rescue platform, is a FREE food runner app that coordinates volunteers to help transport food that would normally be thrown away (40% of all food ends of in the dump!) from a donor (restaurant, grocery, caterer, farmers market, event, etc.) to a place that feeds people in need. Food Rescue US is looking for volunteers, food donors, receiving organizations, and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. Please email Kate Urbank, the DC Site Director, at kate@foodrescue.us with any ideas or questions and sign up at www.foodrescue.us to volunteer or receive more information
