Live music in March from Fougou Jazz, Torbay & Exeter

Wednesday 4 March. The Hopkins - Hammond Organ Trio. Churston Golf Club

Guitarist Matt Hopkins is well known for making regular appearances over the years with John Pearce, Dave Newton, James Morton and Andy Sheppard. The Hopkins-Hammond Trio sees Matt teamed up with the formidably musical husband and wife team of multi-instrumentalist Ruth Hammond on Hammond Organ and drummer Scott Hammond who is probably best known for his work with Ian Anderson’s Jethro Tull but just happens to have a jazz pedigree that includes playing with Alan Barnes, Bobby Wellins, Jason Rebello and many more.

There is an undeniable chemistry between these three master musicians that is evident in everything they play. This could be well known jazz standards, tunes by the likes of John Scofield, Michael Brecker and Pat Metheny or the trio’s own compositions.

Wednesday 18 March. Ben Cox Band. Churston Golf Club

The Ben Cox Band are a fresh young quintet on the UK Jazz scene. Playing music from their shared passions for great tunes from the jazz songbook as well as original songs, the band has a natural affinity for underlying grooves and melody. Their inspiration is drawn from some great songwriters and singers, from Mel Torme and Tony Bennett, to Paul Simon, James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. Their debut album This Waiting Game received four stars in The Telegraph and shot into the top jazz albums of 2015. Twice selling out Ronnie Scott’s and with sold out gigs at Cheltenham Jazz Festival and their album launch at Pizza Express Live in Soho, the Ben Cox Band are on the up. You will have heard them on JazzFM and the Jamie Cullum show.

Hourglass: The Music of James Taylor features much loved songs by Grammy award winning American singer songwriter James Taylor, including How Sweet it is, Mexico, Sweet Baby James, Carolina On My Mind and many more.
