16th March 2020                   ISSUE No: 1

Dear All,

We are pleased to launch the ACE for Development Impact News. This initiative is in line with enhancing the visibility of the Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence for Development Impact (ACE Impact) project through improving information dissemination, communications and engagement among the African Higher Education stakeholders.

The Association of African Universities which is the Regional Facilitation Unit for the ACE Impact Project is responsible for handling communications, project implementation, monitoring, evaluation and learning – and has therefore initiated this platform to facilitate information flow and bring to light the important and enormous work being done by the Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence.

This platform will serve as an additional communication channel for the dissemination of ACE Impact related information. Our other information dissemination platforms include Facebook (ACE I), Twitter (@theACE_Project) and the bi- annual ACE Newsletters where we share success stories and events.

Based on the success of the ACE Phase 1 Project, the World Bank and the French Development Agency (AFD) in collaboration with the African governments and the AAU, launched the ACE Impact Project in 2018 to strengthen post-graduate training and applied research in existing fields and support new fields that are essential for Africa's economic growth. There are 53 ACEs - 25 new ones; 18 from ACE I; 5 Emerging Centers; 1 “top up” center in Social Risk Management; and 4 Colleges and Schools of Engineering. The new thematic areas include sustainable cities; sustainable power and energy; social sciences and education; transport; population health and policy; herbal medicine development and regulatory sciences; public health; applied informatics and communication; and pastoral production.

We are grateful to the Centres for their support in putting these news items together and we encourage them to continuously furnish us with information on latest happenings in their various institutions.
