Meet the Artists: Sunday, March 22, 1pm – 3pm
Join us as we launch the 2020 season of the Arts Network Ottawa exhibition space and meet artists Fivi Lu and Mia Kin!
Fivi Lu studied Fine Arts and Visual Arts in China and in Canad. Fivi’s personal need for adventure constantly leads her to unknown paths. Thus, she often sees a surprise in the final product of her own work. According to Fivi, she is satisfied when her work teaches her something new, but her greatest pleasure and sense of purpose come from meeting others who can experience the unexpected through her work.
Mia Kin started painting with Fivi in spring 2018. Through Fivi’s intuitive teaching method, Mia gradually uncovered her passion in expressing herself in paintings. Mia has a graduate degree in Economics and she is a senior data analyst in her day-job. Her analytical background equips her with strong observations and the ability to de-contextualize, to see beyond the distractions and to reconstruct.
“More Than Meets the Eye” explores portraits of human beings through which hidden emotions come to the surface.
Arts Network Ottawa acknowledges that the land on which we gather is the traditional and unceded territory of the Algonquin nation.

Joignez vous à nous pour le lancement de la saison 2020 de l'espace d'exposition du Réseau des arts d'Ottawa et recontrez les artistes Fivi Lu et Mia Kin !
« Plus qu’un simple regard » explore des portraits humains à travers lesquels des émotions cachées remontent à la surface.
Fivi Lu a étudié les beaux-arts et les arts visuels en Chine et au Canada. C’est son désir pour l'aventure qui la mène sans cesse vers des chemins inconnus. Ainsi, elle trouve souvent des surprises dans le produit final de son travail. Selon Fivi, elle est satisfaite lorsque son travail la fait apprend quelque chose de nouveau, et encore plus quand elle vient à la rencontre de gens qui peuvent vivre l'inattendu à travers de son travail.
Mia Kin a commencé à peindre avec Fivi au printemps 2018. Grâce à la méthode d'enseignement intuitive de Fivi, Mia a pu peu à peu découvrir sa passion pour la peinture. Mia est titulaire d'un diplôme d'études supérieures en économie et travaille comme analyste de données. Sa formation en analyse l'outille d'une grande capacité pour observer et décontextualiser, pour voir au-delà des distractions et pour reconstruire.
Le Réseau des arts d'Ottawa reconnaît que la terre sur laquelle nous nous rassemblons est le territoire traditionnel et non cédé de la nation algonquine.

BÉLA SIMÓ
Congratulations to National Capital Network of Sculptors and Arts Network Ottawa member, Béla Simó, who was chosen to represent Canada at the symposium, Beauce Art The International of Sculpture that will be held in Saint-Georges, Québec, from May 24th to June 14th, 2020. He is one of ten artists who will create on the subject “Radiancy in open air.” The ten new sculptures will be added to the city open-air museum. This year, the sculptures created will be installed inside a circle on a post beside the river, the bicycle path and the road.

BÉLA SIMÓ
Félicitation à Béla Simo, membre du Réseau des sculpteurs de la capitale nationale et du Réseau des arts d'Ottawa, qui a récemment été sélectionné pour représenter le Canada au symposium Beauce Art l'Internationale de la sculpture, qui se tiendra à Saint-Georges, au Québec, du 24 mai au 14 juin 2020. Il est l'un des 10 artistes qui créera sur le thème « Radiance en plein air ». Les 10 nouvelles sculptures seront intégrées au musée en plein air de la ville. Cette année, les sculptures créées seront installées à l'intérieur de cercles sur des poteaux placés près de la rivière, de la piste cyclable et de la route.

POSSIBLE WORLDS: A LOCAL ART AND MUSIC SPACE RE-IMAGINED
Possible Worlds is moving to a larger space that will allow us to better realize our vision for helping independent culture and creativity thrive in Ottawa and beyond. Our new space is in the creative and vibrant neighbourhood of Hintonburg. It will be about three times the size of our current location, at street level and wheelchair accessible.
The countdown to moving into our new space is here! And with that comes the launch of our Kickstarter campaign to help Possible Worlds be the best art and music space it can be.

Une production du Théâtre de dehors, avec l'appui du Théâtre Catapulte et de Créations In Vivo
Copeaux raconte l’histoire d’une relation qui s’effrite, des choses qui se terminent et de ce qui reste après. Copeaux présente la fin de l’amour, la fin sans grand éclat, mais non sans ravage. La création prend comme point d’inspiration l’univers visuel de l’artiste canadien Stefan Thompson, univers peuplé d’animaux, de figures inquiétantes, de forêts de songes. Copeaux est un texte poétique, où chaque image est choisie pour habiter un espace qui flotte entre le rêve, la réalité et le regret.

Presented by: MIFO, the University of Ottawa, and Shenkman Arts Centre.
Alexandra pulls herself out of a rut by embarking on a journey across America. Her destination, the Great Middlegate Shoe Tree.
The tree welcomes travellers by transforming their shoes into fragments of eternity. She is really on the trail of Jack, her grandfather, a constant traveller who has always managed to elude her. The people she encounters along the way help her track him down, on what also proves to be a voyage of self-discovery.
Please note that this play is in French with English subtitles.

Présenté par : MIFO, l’Université d’Ottawa et le Centre des arts Shenkman.
Alexandra s’arrache à sa sédentarité pour entreprendre une traversée de l’Amérique qui mène jusqu’au Great Middlegate Shoe Tree, un arbre à chaussures qui marque le passage des voyageurs en transformant leurs souliers en fragments d’éternité. Mais la route mène surtout jusqu’à Jack, son grand-père, l’infatigable voyageur qui lui a échappé toute sa vie. Tous ceux qu’elle croise sur sa route la conduisent sur les traces de son aïeul et aussi, chemin faisant, à la rencontre de soi.

YOUNG AT ART APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN

Young at Art is a juried art exhibition bringing the work of young visual artists to local art galleries. Held annually since 1996, Young at Art recognizes the creative efforts of young artists across Ottawa. Accepted works are displayed in a community gallery and are eligible for a number of prizes and awards.
Each year submitted artworks are reviewed by a jury of established and new artists from our community. The jury process delivers exciting, quality exhibitions based on common assessment criteria: elements of art, craftsmanship, composition, originality, and uniqueness of style.
Who is eligible to enter?
Visual artists between 12 to 20 years of age as of January 1, 2020 who live or got to school in Ottawa.

Artistes en herbe est une exposition d’œuvres sélectionnées par un jury qui présente le travail de jeunes artistes dans les galeries d’art locales. Depuis 1996, Artistes en herbe met de l’avent chaque année les efforts de création de jeunes artistes de partout à Ottawa. Les œuvres sélectionnées sont exposées dans une galerie d’art communautaire et sont admissibles à de nombreux prix et récompenses.
Chaque année, les œuvres d’art présentées sont examinées par un jury composé d’artistes locaux reconnus et de la relève. L’évaluation du jury contribue à présenter des expositions exaltantes et de qualité selon les critères d’évaluation communs suivants : éléments artistiques, savoir-faire, composition, originalité et caractère unique du style.
Qui est admissible?
Tout artiste visuel âgé de 12 à 20 ans, en date du 1 janvier 2020, qui demeure à Ottawa ou fréquente une école sur le territoire de la ville.

Indigenous Futurisms is an emerging field that orients Indigenous lived experiences and decolonial perspectives into the realms of science fiction. More broadly, Indigenous Futurisms is the re-imagining, visualization and creation of possible futures for Indigenous peoples by Indigenous artists and creators. In this session, Howard Alder will focus on Indigenous Futurist perspectives from North America with a cross section of both film and video based works as well as independent video games.

VIDEO SCHOOLHOUSE 2020 @ SAW VIDEO
8 consecutive Tuesday evenings
April 7 – May 26 | 6pm – 9pm | 2 Daly Avenue
Registration deadline: April 1, 2020
This program is geared towards beginner level or first-time filmmakers. It is designed to provide hands-on instruction and experience at each stage of making a video, from pre- to post-production. Participants will be guided by experienced filmmakers as they work in small groups to complete short video projects from start to finish. Topics covered include treatment, scriptwriting, storyboarding, budgeting, location scouting, managing your shoot, technical training on camera, lighting and sound equipment, cinematography, aesthetics of editing and instruction on digital editing with DaVinci Resolve software.
At the end of the program, participants may retain copies of their final films, and will also be provided with a Video Schoolhouse Certificate marking the completion of the program and confirming the number of hours of video training that they have completed.

CAPITAL CHAMBER CHOIR PRESENTS
SCHNITTKE’S CONCERTO FOR CHOIR
March 14 | 8pm | St. Joseph’s Parish, 174 Wilbrod Street
Composed during the years 1984 and 1985, this work for voices has a text based on a 10th-century Armenian devotional manuscript by the poet Gregory of Narek. As a German-Jewish composer living in Russia, Schnittke displays his deep understanding of the root of the music of the Russian Orthodox church.

The University of Ottawa Choir is celebrating the life and works of Beethoven on his 250th anniversary. With the participation of uOttawa School of Music choirs and instrumentalists, the concert will also feature the Ottawa premiere of A Silence Haunts Me by Jake Runestad. Musical direction: Robert Filion and Laurence Ewashko.

À l’occasion du 250e anniversaire de Beethoven, la Chorale de l’Université d’Ottawa présente un concert pour célébrer sa vie et son œuvre.
