WESLEY NURSE NEWS                                                       Iris Chavez, RN

As we hear more and more about COVID-19, otherwise known as the Coronavirus and increased travel with Spring Break on the horizon, we need to get back to basics of preventing the spread of viruses such as these. One of the best ways to prevent the spread of flu and similar viruses is by proper handwashing. (Cohut, 2020.) A study on handwashing out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported that those who do wash their hands, only half actually use soap and those that use soap, may not wash properly. (Nicolaides, et al. 2019)
What can we do? As a church we are called to lead so let us lead by example and follow the Centers for Disease Control Guidelines:
Follow these five steps every time.

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

If soap and water aren’t available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
