COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Arts Sector Update

Buncombe County COVID-19 Arts Impact Survey

It is safe to say that the entire arts sector is feeling the impact of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. In an effort to gain an accurate and ongoing assessment of COVID-19's impact on Buncombe County arts professionals and organizations, the Asheville Area Arts Council has created this open survey and we are asking that you provide us with updates as necessary. Please complete and share.

POSTPONED: Opening Celebration for Mel Chin's Wake  & March Creative Sector Talk

Right now, Mel Chin’s giant animatronic sculpture, WAKE, is coming together at 44 Collier Avenue in Asheville. It will open this Sunday, March 15, and will remain on view through September 7. The public opening event scheduled for Sunday afternoon and our celebration at Burial Beer has been postponed. Buncombe County has asked that people avoid nonessential large public gatherings, and we will support that effort. WAKE is beautiful and impressive. Please do take it in at some point.

As you know, this Asheville installation was made possible through collaboration and community support. May the same spirit of partnership and support stay with us as we navigate a quickly changing health situation.

We have also decided to postpone our next Creative Sector Talk on Building a More Inclusive City Through the Arts: Public Art and Creative Placemaking in Chattanooga, scheduled for March 24 at the Center for Craft.

Updates

There were many developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic yesterday.

On Tuesday, March 10, Gov. Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency in NC, and, as of yesterday, Cooper is advising against gatherings of more than 100 people in North Carolina. Such gatherings include conferences, assemblies, sporting events, concerts and worship services, he said. Cooper also recommended that employers allow people to work from home.

Though there are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Buncombe County, both Buncombe County & Asheville City have declared a State of Emergency.

The county’s earlier declaration makes Buncombe eligible for state and federal resources that may be made available to communities to address the COVID-19, county Board of Commissioners Chairman Brownie Newman said at the time. It enables all units of government in Buncombe to work together in the response. County staff recommended allowing the quick transfer of $250,000 from the budget fund balance to public health if necessary.

Both City & County cautioned against any public gatherings that are not essential at this time.
