I know a lot of people are getting quite concerned about what’s going to happen regarding Coronavirus. We just don’t know whether it’s going to have a major effect on us or not. Here are a few things I can support you with.

1 - if you do come to the shop - I haven’t got any hand sanitiser available (supermarket shelves are empty). However, if you’d like to wash your hands with soap and water in the kitchen area before and after you shop that’s absolutely fine, just ask.

2 - If you do have to self-isolate then please let me know if I can help to deliver fruit and vegetables to you, I can also deliver bread and eggs. We will keep these deliveries going as long as possible. Regular deliveries are made from Roxton to Bedford on a Wednesday, and Godmanchester to St Neots on a Thursday.

3 – Please consider paying by card in the shop – I will clean the card machine as often as possible – cards are a lot cleaner than handing over cards and coins.

4 – I will be washing my hands as often as possible, please bear with me whilst I do this.

I’m sure the situation is going to change a lot over the next few weeks so just call or email me if you would like some help.

Whilst I will be doing my very best not to get infected with Conoravirus, this may happen. I am working on a plan that will allow the shop to stay open. We will keep you up to if anything changes, we will also be posting on social media.
White sprouting broccoli is still available, it really is a delicious vegetable. You can have it steamed or stirred into pasta or risotto’s I like it because unlike the purple sprouting broccoli, it doesn’t turn your vegetable water pink! But like the purple sprouting broccoli you can eat all of the leaves the stem and the flowers.  The Cavalo Nero has now finished for the season, but still plenty of Curly Kale around.

Rhubarb is going well - it’s going to take a few weeks to become sick of rhubarb crumble.

I can also tell you that the very first stalks of Asparagus have made themselves known in David’s glasshouses in Wyboston. David and Amanda brought Woody’s place last spring, so this is their first full crop. It will take a few weeks for the crop to fully start, by early April there should be plenty.

Veg boxes
Over the next few weeks some of the choices of vegetables are likely to finish – so we may need to substitute things at short notice. Please ensure your list of ‘never send me’ items is up to date. We should be able to get early (glasshouse grown) salads by May.

In the boxes next week will be:
Maincrop Potatoes
Parsnips
Carrots (loose)
Leeks
White Onion
Butternut Squash
Celery
Swede
White Sprouting Broccoli

The next planned delivery date for Godmanchester/Offords/Paxtons/St Neots is Thursday 26th March.

Please order all boxes and extras by Sunday night for delivery next Wednesday.
Recipe of the week

White or Purple Sprouting Broccoli with sautéed onions & bacon

This is a great side dish for meat or fish. Omit the bacon if you prefer.

Ingredients
300g long-stem broccoli, ends trimmed
1 tsp olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
140g streaky bacon, chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

Method
Cook the broccoli for 3 mins in boiling salted water. Drain, run under cold water until completely cooled, then set aside.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion and bacon. Cook on a medium heat for about 10 mins, adding the garlic halfway through, until the bacon is crisp, and the onions are soft and golden.

Add the broccoli to the pan, then toss through to coat in the oil. Cook for a couple more mins until the broccoli is completely heated through. Season with pepper, then serve immediately.

Whatever your plans this weekend (shopping, cooking, gardening or just relaxing), I hope you have an enjoyable one.

Kind regards

Sue Lang
