Dear Meyer Prep Community:

We are one Meyer Prep family but also part of a larger Jewish day school and South Florida Community. At a time when our school and larger community need us to work together to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus, our school is announcing that we are closing our physical campus starting Monday, March 16, 2020, and going to an online format starting Tuesday, March 17. Announcements about when we will reopen our school building will be made at a later date.

This decision was not taken lightly. We recognize that our school’s transition to an online format puts a tremendous amount of pressure on our families. We are sorry for all the inconvenience this action may cause. However, even though there are no reported cases of COVID-19 at our school, all of us play a part in stopping the spread of this potentially deadly virus, including our school.

For the last few days, we have been speaking with other Jewish day schools throughout the community about the role all of us play in stopping the coronavirus from spreading. The truth is, Meyer Prep closing its building is not nearly enough to stop the virus from spreading. It takes all of us to recognize that each of us plays a role in ending this epidemic. Individually, we can make sure we consistently wash our hands and stay home when we are sick. As a school, we can transition to a distance learning format through online instruction. And as a community, we can rally around each other to protect the most vulnerable in our community by suspending any large gatherings of people.

Closing our school building and shifting to online learning is not meant to only protect our school community but part of a larger effort by many schools and organizations to protect all of us. When we all join together we maximize our efforts at stopping the virus from spreading. And that is our goal with this decision – to play our part in the community at stopping the virus from infecting more people.

In the next few days, all of our parents and students will receive emails from their children's teachers and the principal about how our school will continue instruction through online technology, online resources, and teacher expectations. Although our school is closing its building, providing instruction to our students is not stopping and will continue through these online formats. Please check your email within the next 48 hours for principal and teacher communications.

Thank you to faculty and staff members for your cooperation and support during this unprecedented event. The decision to close our building was not one we wanted to make. However, given the situation and the role our school can play in helping to stop the spread of the virus, we felt that this was the best decision for our students, staff, families, and school community. The time for waiting to see what happens has passed. Our school needed to act, and we did so for all of us in our community.

Again, we are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this decision may cause. We look forward to getting back to welcoming our students on campus.

May Hashem keep all of our families and community safe during this especially difficult time.

Shabbat Shalom,
