The Prospect Heights Shul
A Modern Orthodox Shul in Brownstone Brooklyn

Dear PHS Family,

After serious consideration, PHS will cancel services and all in-person activities for the immediate future beginning this Shabbat, March 13-14, 2020.

We will provide an update mid-next week on future Shabbat plans, and will communicate regularly for as long as the uncertainty and public health risk persists. In the coming days, we will also announce initiatives to maintain our communal life and mutual support. We will continue to host our regular Torah classes over Zoom (more details to come). Unfortunately, we will need to reschedule our Shabbat Telamdeini, originally scheduled for March 21-22.

We recognize the gravity of the health concern here in New York City and around the world. We are doing what we can to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. As Jews, protecting human life is our most sacred responsibility. This moment gives us the opportunity to fully express this fundamental truth. We made this decision in coordination with other local shuls and rabbinic leaders, including Kol Israel (CKI) and Rabbi Reinstein, to best ensure the safety of our broader community.

As always, I want to stress that I am available to talk with anyone struggling during this stressful time. Being afraid and anxious is to be expected. You don’t need to be alone in this. I’m here for you. Please call/text or email me. Likewise, please reach out if you would like Halachic guidance on issues related to the virus and quarantine.

May this Shabbat bring healing to the world,

Rabbi Jonathan Leener
