St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne and Covid-19 (Coronavirus)

Dear Worshippers and Volunteers,

Today the Chief Medical Officer of Australia, Prof Brendan Murphy, has advised to limit the size of public gatherings, which will impact larger services at St Paul’s Cathedral in the run up to and including Easter. The following new measures will be adopted as of today, 13 March 2020, for worshippers and visitors to the Cathedral:
  • Reduced Worshipper and Visitor Numbers:  St Paul’s will limit access to 500 visitors and worshippers in the Cathedral at any one time. This will enable visitors and worshippers to retain three steps (2m) distance from one another to reduce the risk of airborne infection.
  • Hand sanitising at all doors: Stewards will ask visitors and worshippers to sanitise their hands upon entry into the Cathedral and Cathedral buildings. Hand sanitisers are already available at our concierge desks. Clergy, servers and staff will continue to use the hand sanitisers provided in the vestry and sanctuary.
  • Morning Teas and Congregational Meals: Morning Tea following our worship, and congregational meals are suspended. This Sunday's planned Congregational Consultation has been postponed.
  • Seniors Group: Members of the seniors group are the most vulnerable at risk cohort, which means that during the Covid-19 pandemic seniors meetings will be suspended.
  • English Conversation Corner (ECC): will go into recess immediately until the threat of the pandemic is over. There will be NO class on Monday 16 March.
The following existing measures remain in place to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 among staff, worshippers and visitors:
  • Hand-washing: Hand-washing instructions have been posted in all lavatories, with the encouragement to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for more than 20 seconds (the duration of the Lord’s Prayer).
  • Disinfection and cleaning: Hard surface areas are disinfected regularly with alcoholic wipes. Surface areas cleaned include: collection bowls and donation points, laminated orders of service, children’s activity packs and visitor guides. Pews and floors are cleaned according to the routine maintenance program.
  • Physical contact: Touching, including shaking of hands in the welcome area, or liturgically at the greeting of peace, has been suspended.
  • Common Cup: The administration of the common cup has been suspended, with the president receiving the Eucharistic wine on behalf of all.
  • Font: Water in the dipping font, for signing with the sign of the cross as a reminder of our baptismal covenant, has been removed.
  • Children’s Corner: Toys and books have been removed from the children’s area. Individually wrapped activity packs for children continue to be available on Sundays. These will be disinfected before and after use.
If any worshippers, visitors, staff or volunteers are unwell, they should not attend the Cathedral. Instead, they may follow our 10:30am Sunday Choral Eucharist and Wednesday and Thursday 5:10pm Choral Evensong online via livestream.

Please keep all affected by this pandemic – those infected or fearful of infection, and those serving in our public health care and aged care facilities – as well as the community at St Paul’s in your prayer at this time.
With all good wishes,

Andreas Loewe
Dean of Melbourne
