Creek Week Rescheduled to Fall 2020

MARCH UPDATE

In light of growing concerns regarding COVID-19, Keep Durham Beautiful is following recommendations made by the City of Durham and the Centers for Disease Control. In an effort to minimize interactions and reduce the potential spread of the virus, we have decided to take proactive measures and cancel all volunteer events at this time until further notice.

We apologize for this inconvenience and for not being able to host these events. We were excited and we know you were too. We want to prioritize the health of our dedicated volunteers and the greater community. Once the risk is minimized, we look forward to reconnecting with all of our volunteers for future events!

Plan to celebrate Creek Week with us in October in conjunction with Big Sweep!

Meanwhile, there are still plenty of ways you can get into the spirit of Creek Week this spring. You can always organize your own litter cleanup - our Litter Hotspot Map offers suggested locations. You can also play along with our Creek Week BINGO Card - check out some of these ideas:
  • Find your local watershed
  • Go on a nature walk in your watershed
  • Identify a macroinvertebrate
  • Pick up litter in your neighborhood
  • Ask for no plastic straw in your drink when you order
  • Adopt a Storm Drain (draindurham.org)
  • Explore a creek or river
  • Install a rain barrel
  • Plant a native tree or wildflowers
  • Pick up litter at a park or playground
  • Visit durhamnc.gov/1006 for water conservation tips
Please reach out to us with further questions at info@keepdurhambeautiful.org.

We reached our STRAWS goal!

We've officially reached our goal, raising enough money to bring the inspirational environmental film STRAWS to all 13 Middle Schools in Durham Public Schools this year, with enough to purchase licenses for 3 elementary and high schools too!  These film licenses apply to each entire school, FOREVER, meaning they can be used in multiple classrooms, assemblies and even to host a community screening! Each license package also includes:
  • lesson plans that provide single-use plastic reduction
  • action activities for grade bands 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12
  • screening toolkit and discussion guide
Watch the trailer or learn more at strawsfilm.com.
At Barrel Culture's weekly Thursday Community Nights, a portion of all sales go directly to a charity in our community, and we were honored to the be the charity of the month in January! The fine folks at Barrel Culture raised over $300 for Keep Durham Beautiful at Community Night and also by the sale of these incredible reusable Nalgene water bottles! The bottles are still available in the taproom and on the web. $1 from each bottle will go directly to Keep Durham Beautiful.

On February 29th, Keep Durham Beautiful planted trees in collaboration with the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative (DCOI) in Old North Durham. 59 Volunteers, including the UNC TriBeta Honors Biology Club, Duke Sanford School of Public Policy and additional Duke students planted 64 trees on Foster, Trinity and Geer Streets in Downtown Durham. Thanks to DCOI which sponsored 430 trees in 2019-20 that would otherwise not have been planted this season.

On Saturday, March 7th KDB partnered with TreesDurham to plant 32 trees at W.G. Pearson Elementary School with the help of 52 volunteers, including folks from Durham Public Schools, Our Youth of Today and Tomorrow, Riverside High School Engineering Students, Bull City Classrooms, and Boy Scout Pack 424.
