Researchers evaluate free vape kit program for smoking cessation

Researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) are evaluating a new free vape kit scheme in Great Yarmouth, to help find out whether the initiative helps people to quit smoking tobacco for good. The innovative scheme which is provided by Smokefree Norfolk, offers a vape voucher to people in the Great Yarmouth area who are struggling to quit smoking. Around 21% of people who live in Great Yarmouth smoke tobacco, compared to 14% of people in the rest of Norfolk, and 15% as a national average.

Dr Punam Krishan: More now than ever it’s vital for smokers to quit

Smoking is one our greatest societal challenges as it remains the biggest single preventable cause of ill-health, disability and early death in Scotland. Smoking is a significant public health problem causing an annual estimated rate of one in four deaths in Scotland. More than 33,000 hospital admissions are secondary to complications of smoking every year. This not only places a lot of challenges on patients themselves but such peaks, especially in winter time, puts the NHS under immense pressure, costing the health service around £400million every year. Just imagine what we could do for the country’s health with this money!

A ban on tobacco flavors would drive users to Native American outlets

The Buffalo News’ endorsement of a proposed statewide ban on flavored tobacco products (“Now’s the time to ban flavored tobacco,” Feb. 19, 2020) completely ignored the primary source of such products across Western New York. Native American enterprises already attract 55% to 70% of the region’s non-Indian users of tobacco, flocking there to avoid New York’s exorbitant tobacco tax rates – $43.50 on a carton of cigarettes alone. State law and a unanimous Supreme Court decision notwithstanding, the tribes refuse to collect any such taxes, making their prices irresistibly lower.

RESEARCH & COMMENTARY: FLORIDA FLAVOR BAN WOULD NOT CURB YOUTH VAPING USE, WILL HURT BUSINESSES

A proposed bill in the Florida Legislature would ban the sale of flavored nicotine products and have substantial effects on the Sunshine State's economy. A bill under consideration in the Florida Legislature would ban the sale of flavored nicotine products (not including tobacco-flavored) throughout the Sunshine State. If enacted, Florida’s guidelines would be far stricter than federal standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and would only allow the sale of products that pass FDA’s Premarket Tobacco Product Applications process.

Fruit-flavoured shisha more damaging to smokers’ health, research finds

Fruit-flavoured shisha could be more damaging to smokers’ health than unflavoured pipe tobacco, new research suggests. Scientists at UAE University found that mice exposed to apple or strawberry-flavoured shisha underwent harmful biochemical changes not seen in those that breathed unflavoured shisha smoke. “Overall, the toxicity of flavoured tobacco WPS (waterpipe) smoking, in particular strawberry-flavoured WPS, was found to be greater than that of unflavoured WPS,” the researchers wrote in their paper in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity.
