COVID-19 and Iowa State

If you haven’t been reading the university’s COVID-19 updates once a day or so, we’d encourage you to do so! If you have any questions about the weeks after spring break and what they mean for you, let us know! Honors can help find you the answers. At this time, classes will be held online between March 23 and April 3. Students are encouraged not to return to Ames after spring break ends on March 20, though on campus housing will still be open and available if students need them (students need to fill out an online form by March 18 if they need to return, however). Other things to note include:

  • Course registration dates have been pushed back. Find more information here.
  • Fall '20 Honors seminar registration is below in this email - keep reading!
  • If you're a student employee, talk to your employer! Know your rights and current practices by checking the student employee section here.
  • A huge public health recommendation is "social distancing"...but what does that actually look like during and after spring break? The most conservative recommendations mean you need to dramatically alter your daily lives, starting now. Check out this helpful tip sheet from Thielen Student Health Center or these recommendations from public health officials in The Atlantic.

We are all smart and adaptable people and  we're confident we as a community can get through these next weird weeks with patience and understanding. We care a lot about each of you and your health and wellness are important! Everything about this semester/university is flexible; whatever happens, we will work it out. The Honors office will remain open throughout spring break and the weeks following, so if you need a n y t h i n g and you are in Ames, let us know!

Fall '20 Honors Seminars Coming Soon

Registration for Fall 2020 Honors seminars opens on April 22nd at 12:00pm (and not a moment sooner). Students will be able to view the seminar offerings on this website by March 20.

Have questions about the seminar registration process? Here are some seminar things you should know:
-All seminars will open at 12:00pm for registration on April 22.
-All registration reference numbers, along with course descriptions, times, locations, etc. will be found on the Fall 2020 Seminars page, check it regularly for updates.
-Generally seminars are capped at 17 students to keep the classes small and discussion based.
-If you try to register for a seminar and it is full, your name is automatically added to a waitlist by trying to register.
-If a spot in a course that had been full opens up, Katie Flannery will email the students on the waitlist in order until the seat is filled.
-If a course is full, the only way to add the course is to attempt to register yourself so that you get added to the waitlist and then wait to see if Katie Flannery emails you to offer you an opening.
-Do not wait until your last semester at Iowa State to take your required seminars – some seminars may be cancelled prior to Fall 2020 as a result of low enrollment, or instructor conflict. Do NOT count on fulfilling requirements your last semester if at all possible.

Questions? Contact Katie Flannery!
