The New Americans Fellowship (NAF) is a leadership pipeline for DACA recipients. Managed by the Office of Immigrant Relations, the Fellowship is 10 weeks between June 2020 - September 2020 and offers up to $10,000 stipend to cover living expensesFellows are placed in various County departments and gain translatable, professional skills such as:

  • Research and policy analysis 
  • Public communication and group facilitation
  • Graphic design and marketing
  • Develop knowledge to intergovernmental processes
  • Project support and management
  • County software​
  • Serve as ambassadors to improve and expand immigrant integration​

Eligibility Requirements

To Qualify, All Must Apply
  • Current recipient of Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) with work permit eligibility through the entire length of the fellowship (June - September 2020)
  • Employment authorization card
  • Currently working, living, or attending school in Santa Clara County
  • Can commit to 10 weeks between June 2020 - September 2020
  • Undergraduate, graduate, or recent college graduate
  • Desire to be involved in immigration and social justice
What to Expect
The Office of Immigrant Relations will recruit 15 fellows for the 2020 summer New Americans Fellowship (NAF). Fellows will be placed in various County departments known as host sites.

Host sites for the 2020 NAF have not been selected​*. To view a list of host sites that participated in the past, click here​.
*If you are a County department and would like to participate as a host site, applications for host sites open Thursday January 23, 2020.*

Depending on the host site's focus, fellows may focus on the following elements pertaining to immigrants:
  • ​​LGBTQ and women's rights and resources
  • Public safety
  • Protecting immigrant communities from immigration fraud
  • Civic engagement, community education, and outreach
  • Supporting access to services for limited and non English speaking individuals
  • Financial literacy and navigating access to services​​​

Timeline (exact timeline will be determined after applications close)
  • Applications open February 3, 2020
  • Application Deadline EXTENDED: March 15, 2020*
  • *Letter(s) of recommendation: Wednesday March 18, 2020 to immigrant.relations@ceo.sccgov.org
  • Notification of Selection: April 6, 2020
  • Fellowship: 10 weeks between June and September 2020*
*The exact start date will be determined in March 2020 after the 2020 cohort is selected to ensure that the timeline works well for the fellows based on school calendars. We anticipate starting NAF on the 2nd or 3rd week of June 2020 and will run for 10 consecutive weeks.
