Request for Gift Card Donations So Needy Families Can Purchase Food During School Closure

As many of you are likely aware, FCPS school closures can have an adverse impact on students in need. Many students -- including many at VES -- rely on schools for their meals. When schools are closed, those resources are temporarily gone. FCPS plans to continue offering breakfast and lunch at a few schools throughout the county during the shutdown, but the PTA is hoping to supplement that in case families in need are unable to travel to those schools each day. Because VES will now be closed for roughly one month, we are making the following request: we are seeking donations by way of gift cards from Giant, Walmart, or Target in any amount (though $25 would be ideal for ease of distribution) so families in need can purchase food during the shutdown. If you are able to help, please drop off gift cards by 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at the home of Heather Kenney -- 417 Glyndon St. SE Vienna VA 22180 on the corner of Glyndon St. SE and Valley Drive. The Kenneys will place a special mailbox labeled "VES" at the top of their front steps by their front door where gift cards can be dropped during daylight hours if no one is home. We will deliver all the gift cards to the VES office Wednesday morning so staff can distribute quickly to families in need. March 17th "Stock the Lounge" Event Canceled

The Staff Appreciation Committee's "Stock the Lounge" event is canceled in light of the school closure. Thank you to all the parents and families who volunteered to bring in items for the teachers' lounge.

March Food Drive to Benefit Food for Others Extended

Please support VES 6th graders with their community service project as they collect food for distribution by Food for Others. The food drive will be extended once schools reopen. Donation bins will be located inside the school and outside on Walking Wednesdays and Bike Fridays. Purchase any of the items listed here, go to the Amazon wishlist or scan the QR code to have the item sent directly to the school.  

Read-A-Thon Winners

Congratulations to all of the students that participated in the Read-A-Thon. Vienna Vikings are super-readers! Students read 547,694 minutes of our total school goal of 287,740!

And now, a drum roll, please. The overall winners of the Read-A-Thon are:

1st Place - Lynch
2nd Place - Meletti
3rd Place - Long

Two classes had 100% participation all four weeks! Congratulations to Ms. Lynch's and Ms. Dempsey's classes for going the distance.

It's a Tax Day Celebration at The Sandwich Shop

Dining for Dollars returns to The Sandwich Shop on Wednesday, April 15th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Support our school (and spend that tax refund) while enjoying the best sandwiches in town! The Sandwich Shop is located at 132 Church Street, NW and will be donating 20% of sales back to the VES PTA. 

If this event is canceled or postponed we will announce it as soon as possible in the Viking Voice and via email and social media.

Dining for Dollars at The Casual Pint Rescheduled to May 31st

The Casual Pint is a brand-new, VES-family owned pub in Falls Church and owners Darren and Marinn McClure have invited the VES community to join them for a fun Dining for Dollars on Sunday, May 31, from 12:00-4:00 p.m. The Casual Pint is located at 6410 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church - about a 15-minute drive - and features fun games, TVs (for the March Madness fans!), a kid-friendly menu, craft root beer on tap, and 34 rotating craft beers on tap, plus wine and great food for the grown-ups! Bring the attached flyer and your whole clan for lunch or snacks, and The Casual Pint will donate 20% of profits back to the VES PTA.

Faculty Basketball Game Postponed

The VES faculty basketball game scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m. at Madison High School has been postponed. We are hoping to reschedule the event for later this spring. Stay tuned for more information.

VES 5K and Fun Run

Dust off your running shoes and be part of the 2020 VES 5K and Fun Run on Sunday, April 26th at 8:10 a.m. Registration is already open - click over and secure your spot   Want to be a sponsor? Head on over and see the variety of sponsorships available. **As of Sunday, March 15 this is event remains on our schedule as planned. We will announce any changes as soon as possible in the Viking Voice and via email and social media.**

Bike Fridays are Back This Spring!

Encourage a healthy lifestyle of physical activity by supporting students who bike to school! Volunteer to hand out Biking Viking bracelets to biking/scootering students on Friday mornings from 8:15-8:45 a.m once school resumes. Questions? Please contact Cheryl Levine.

BoxTops for Education

We are a BoxTops for Education School!  Clip BoxTops from participating products and send them into school in a bag or envelope labeled "BoxTops".  Please make sure they have not expired.  Our PTA will submit the BoxTops twice a year to earn money for our school.

Volunteer Opportunities

info or to volunteer for any of the positions below. 

• 5K/Fun Run Sponsorship Chair: Recruit (the PTA will help!) and organize the sponsorship team in order to contact previous and new potential sponsors to enlist support for the springtime 5K, as well as obtain sponsor logos.
