Other things of interest this month
Support your health and connect with the birds
While we all continue to follow CDC guidelines for social distancing, we also want to encourage you to consider using this time to further appreciate and take advantage of nature. Fresh air and exercise support the immune system, lower stress and increase happiness. While remaining cautious and making responsible decisions, this can be an opportunity to get outside, observe the birds and learn about the different species in your neighborhood or area. Visit allaboutbirds.org for resources and apps to identify the birds you see, virtual bird watching and more.
Free pollinator seed for projects
Land that isn’t ideal for production can make great habitat. The Bee and Butterfly Habitat Fund is capitalizing on this by providing free pollinator seed mixtures on projects that are two acres in size or larger on private, public and corporate lands. Find information on the program here.
Recognizing the importance of groundwater
Did you know that groundwater accounts for 33 percent of all the water used by U.S. municipalities? And 44 percent of the U.S. population depends on groundwater for its drinking water supply. Playas also play an important role in improving groundwater quality as water that reaches the aquifer through playas is of higher quality than that going through other pathways.
National Groundwater Awareness Week falls in March, so we’re emphasizing and sharing the important role groundwater plays in our ecosystems. Learn more about this valuable resource and how playas playa a primary role in recharge.
One watershed in motion
In honor of National Groundwater Awareness Week, take a tour of the Platte River Basin through a multimedia documentary and timelapse project. See and hear a variety of stories about the 90,000 square-mile basin.
