Speaking of Everything
Welcome to my every-other-week newsletter. Since many of us are going to be spending the next few days hunkered down in our homes, I'm devoting much of this issue to a listing of my favorite shows of the past few months. They're all streaming, and my tastes are all over the map, which means you should be able to find something to get you through our national shutdown!

Be sure to share this email with anyone who's suddenly looking to kill a few hours ...  but first, let's get to the new stuff:

‘Devs’ brings our worst fears to life

I wrote this review of the FX-Hulu Big Tech thriller starring Nick Offerman before the coronavirus brought other fears to life. Read my review in Primetimer.

Coronavirus clears out the studio audiences

Why do Today, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and The View have studio audiences? A question I'm asking after those shows closed their tapings to outsiders this week. Read my story in Primetimer.

‘The Most Dangerous Animal of All’

This new FX-Hulu docuseries about a man who thinks his father was a serial killer is a fascinating exploration into the stories we tell ourselves. My review in Primetimer

Now streaming: My favorite current shows

I review shows that don't require a huge time commitment — which means you can get through one of my picks in about the time it takes for the local supermarket to restock its toilet paper supply!

Netflix

  • Better Call Saul, the magical prequel to Breaking Bad, is airing Season 5 on AMC and four previous seasons on Netflix.
  • The Two Popes, starring Anthony Hopkins, is about way more than Catholicism.
  • In the gripping docuseries Living Undocumented, hopeful American immigrants get harassed by ICE.
  • The Harvey Weinstein case resurfaced in the news (briefly), so now’s a great time to watch Unbelievable.
  • Sasha Baron Cohen did a fantastic dramatic turn as an Israeli Mossad agent in The Spy.

Hulu

  • For Life is a promising legal drama airing on ABC based on the incredible life story of wrongfully convict prison lawyer Isaac Wright Jr.
  • Briarpatch stars Rosario Dawson and Jay R. Ferguson in a kicky homage to noir.
  • The Good Place has gone to that good place — eternal reruns.
  • Why now is the perfect time to watch Bob (Hearts) Abishola.
  • And Stumptown.
  • And mixed-ish.

PBS Passport

You get this great on-demand perk when you support your PBS station for $5/month. Five bucks!

Apple TV+

  • Visible: Out on Television is a surprisingly complete history of TV, not just gays and TV.
  • Little America is a fantastic anthology of immigrant stories, each of which will leave you feeling better.
  • It got mixed reviews, but I really liked Octavia Spencer in Truth Be Told.

Disney+

The Mandalorian, of course.
