The Possible Canine | March 2020 Newsletter

Hello, my dog-loving friends!

In this issue, I’m providing two recipes for a 15 pound dog – one raw, one cooked, both high protein, moderate fat and low carbohydrate – both grain free. As with all recipes shared here, there’s no guarantee these will work well for your unique individual – some dogs do better with more or less fat, more or less carb, different types of fiber – the list goes on. But experience tells me these foods/values work well for many individuals, so as promised, here are March’s recipes. Please note – as always – these recipes are developed for healthy adults, not puppies, and not for dogs with nutritionally responsive health conditions..

Both are good choices for a mature 14-16 lb dog, who gets a good amount of exercise and can eat in the middle range of the energy scale. This recipe accounts for the fact most people will treat their dogs a little, so you could aim for around 450 calories in total, or cut back if he/she is getting a little pudgy.

Before we launch into the recipes, though, I would like to  let you know about a Special offer, open only to Subscribers of this list. For the month of March, both my Nutrition courses – the full certificate programs described here: Basics of Canine Nutrition and Canine Diet Formulation, are on sale for 50% off. That’s right – if you’ve been considering taking the plunge into one or the other course, now might just be the time. Just use coupon code CERT50 at checkout to receive your discount.

One Day Recipe - Cooked

Recipe One

To make this one-day chicken and beef-based recipe, combine the following and mix well.

Note that all weights given are for foods after cooking. Please use gram weights, not cups, which are less accurate and only given as a general guideline.

  • 3 ounces of dark meat chicken, roasted and diced, no skin
  • 3 ounces (85 grams) 5% fat ground beef, gently cooked in a little water
  • 35 grams baked sweet potato, mashed, no skin
  • 38 grams well rinsed and cooked quinoa
  • 9 grams poached beef liver
  • 15 grams poached chicken liver
  • ¼ cup (32.5 grams) steamed and drained kale
Allow this mixture to cool and stir in the following supplements.
This recipe is adequate in all the Bs, except slightly low in Thiamin (B1) and I personally like to boost B comp a little over the RA (Recommended Allowance) anyway, so I would add about 1/3 capsule (needn't be exact!) of this B complex I really like (and use with my own dogs): https://ca.iherb.com/pr/Thorne-Research-B-Complex-6-60-Capsules/18129

Stir these directly into the food and serve – two meals is ideal, or two plus a snack.

This recipe is developed for a 14-16 pound dog, who does well with moderate calories,  and does well with low carb and higher protein. It may not suit the needs of all 14-16 pound dogs!  Some nice additions to consider adding could include:
  • a little extra steamed veggie (cruciferous, maybe)
  • a few mashed blueberries, or grated organic apple
  • a tbsp of plain yogurt, fat content according to individual
  •  ¼ tsp rosehip powder, for lycopene and anti-inflammatory actions
... non-essentials, but very beneficial!

Lastly, manganese here comes in right at RA, but I generally like a little more. I also like to see mature dogs on a joint support formula, and these should contain a little manganese, so that is one good way to supply this sometimes hard to provide mineral.

Recipe Two

One Day Raw Chicken and Beef Recipe

To make this one-day recipe, combine the following and mix well.

Note that all weights given are for foods after cooking. Please use gram weights, not cups, which are less accurate and only given as a general guideline.
  • 4 ounces dark meat chicken, raw, no skin (leg, back and thigh)
  • 4 ounces raw ground beef, 5% fat (note that correct fat content is super important)
  • 35 grams sweet potato, baked in skin, peeled and mashed
  • 30 grams well rinsed and well-cooked quinoa
  • 15 grams raw beef liver
  • 10 grams raw chicken liver
Allow this mixture to cool and stir in the following supplements.
This recipe can also use a small selenium boost – small, as in 3 mcgs, but as I often use nutrient levels above the RA (recommended allowance) I would suggest adding either, say, 10 grams raw beef kidney ( just 9 calories but 14 mcgs of selenium) or 25 grams raw pork tenderloin ( 27 calories and just under 8 mcgs of selenium, nice little B1 boost too). I like to leave options, when using food as supplements for meeting essentials. 😊 I also like to boost most nutrients a bit over the RA, such as Bcomplex, and might add just a quarter of one of these to this recipe, but many folks don’t like supplements, so it’s ok to leave it out. https://ca.iherb.com/pr/Solgar-B-Complex-50-100-Vegetable-Capsules/69612

As with the cooked recipe, adding “the rainbow” of raw, well ground up, or steamed fresh veggies only increases the benefits of this (or any) recipe). Choose carefully, add small amounts to start and refer to my blog articles for more specific information on selection and use of fruit and vegetables for dogs. www.thepossiblecanine.com
