The Department of Art History will host the 37th Annual Art History Graduate Student Symposium on Friday afternoon, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, 2020. The keynote speaker this year is Charlene Villaseñor Black, Professor in the Department of Art History and the César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o Studies, University of California, Los Angeles.

Wednesday, March 25: Drawing Demo and Talk by Guest Artist Mitsuhiro Arita

Anime artist Mistuhiro Arita will conduct a special workshop on Wednesday, March 25 in 2004 WJB beginning at 12:30pm. In addition to designing Pokémon cards for the past 23 years, Mr. Arita has been involved with artwork and concept design for numerous anime, video game and collectible card game franchises. After a short presentation about his work, Mr. Arita will do a live drawing demonstration, conduct a Q&A session and sign autographs.

Alumna Dr. Jennifer Feltman Receives Whiting Public Engagement Grant for Virtual Reality Gothic Cathedral Program

Alumna Jennifer Feltman has been awarded a Whiting Public Engagement Seed Grant for her project “Experiencing Gothic: A VR Cathedral for Middle School Students.” She is partnering with an international team of teachers and digital media experts to build a virtual reality experience of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame at Reims in France and incorporate it into middle-school media arts classes in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Art History Grads at the Newberry Library: 2020 Multidisciplinary Graduate Student Conference

This January, graduate students Rachel Carlisle, Britt Hunter, and Emily White presented research at the Newberry Library’s Center for Renaissance Studies annual graduate student conference. The 2020 Multidisciplinary Graduate Student Conference brought together graduate students from across the nation specializing in the medieval and Renaissance periods.

Museum Object Class Preparing Exhibition Off Kilter: An Exploration of Contemporary Form

This spring, undergraduates in the Art History Museum Object class under the direction of Professor Dr. Kyle Killian are developing the exhibition Off Kilter: An Exploration of Contemporary Form, to open Friday, April 3 at 5 pm in the WJB Gallery.

Professor Tenley Bick’s Lectures and Panels around the Country this Spring

Art History Assistant Professor Tenley Bick, who is currently on research leave as Scholar in Residence at Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring, NY, will travel around the country this spring to present lectures and chair a conference panel, and is also hosting a lecture series on Arte Povera at Magazzino.

FSU Art Historians at the 109th College Art Association Annual Conference

The FSU Department of Art History was once again well represented at the College Art Association (CAA) Annual Conference, as Art History professors, graduate students and alumni presented papers and chaired sessions. The conference was held February 12–15 in Chicago, IL. CAA is the primary professional association of artists and art historians in the United States.

Coming in April: LGBTQ+ Film Showcase Organized by Art History MA Student Olivia Morris

Art History MA student Olivia Morris is organizing an LGBTQ+ Film showcase, coming this April to the Askew Student Life Center. With an emphasis on women and non-binary directors, this showcase is an exploration of the joy of chosen family. On April 4, five shorts and a feature length film will show how queerness can create, support, and sustain ties of kinship. Free & open to the public.

Professor Leitch to Lead Wolfenbüttel Summer Course on Printed Books, Apply by March 15

Professor Stephanie Leitch will convene an international group of scholars in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, this summer for a graduate course on the history of the printed book, hosted by the Herzog August Bibliothek.

Art History Graduate Students Prepare Online Exhibition Indigenize Climate Justice

Indigenize Climate Justice is a decolonial intervention project by Art History MA students Chase Van Tilburg, Olivia Morris, and Savannah Elliott, designed to bring the work of Indigenous activists Allen Salway and Tokata Iron Eyes to the attention of the FSU community through a digital exhibition and sticker campaign. These activists fight to collapse the structures of inequality harming our planet, through creative and subversive methods. Ideally, this intervention will amplify these passionate indigenous voices.
