4-H Newsletter

Enrollment Closes April 1, 2020
     The April 1 deadline is quickly approaching.  Leaders please double check that all your members have officially enrolled for the 2019/20 year.  Member fee is $45; Cloverbud fee is $35.
     Leaders (including resource leaders) need to re-enroll each year or go through the entire approval process again.  This is a requirement of Oregon State 4-H.   

New Leader Training
     Columbia County 4-H has great volunteers!  We always welcome more.  The final training for this enrollment year is Thursday, March 12, 2020 from 6 to 9:30 PM.  The training will be held at the OSU Extension Service, 505 N Columbia River Hwy, St. Helens.  Join an amazing group of people in your community!

4-H Project Materials Online
     This is a reminder that most project materials are available online at the Oregon State 4-H website; and project records can be accessed as fillable pdf files.    

Camp Leadership Training  
     All youth grades 8 - 12 (youth do not have to be enrolled in 4-H) that would like to volunteer at summer camp are encouraged to attend.  Please join us on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 6:30 to 8 PM at the OSU Extension Service in St. Helens.  

Teen Leadership Retreat
     This year’s Teen Leadership Retreat is going to be held at Camp Kiwanilong in Warrenton, Oregon on April 3 - 5, 2020 (Friday evening, all day Saturday and home Sunday morning).
     The Camp Committee is planning programs and events that will enhance your leadership skills, and give you some insight into the 4-H Summer Camp Program and its opportunities. They are also planning an evening of fun and exciting activities. For those who are considering serving as 4-H Summer Camp Counselors, this is a great opportunity for you to learn skills that will assist you at camp.
     The cost is $60.00 per person; this includes food, lodging, and program supplies.  Large scale transportation will not be provided.  Registration deadline is March 27, 2020.

Camp Counselor Interviews
     If you are in grades 9-12, the Camp Committee wants to visit with you.  You may be just the person they are looking for to supervise 5 to 7 campers during the four-day, three-night, fun-filled, all-expenses paid Summer Camp.  Those in grade 8 can apply to be a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) or Camp Staff.  If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please apply.  The applications are due by Friday, March 27, 2020.
    ** New this year – for those who attend Teen Leadership Retreat we will hold interviews at the retreat.  For those who cannot attend, interviews will be held Thursday, April 9.

4-H Summer Camp Counselor/CIT/Staff Application

4-H Summer Camp
     4-H Summer Camp will be held June 14-17, 2020 (June 13-18 for staff) at Camp Kiwanilong in Warrenton, Oregon.   We will open registration in mid-April.

Auction Committee Meeting
     The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at 6:30 PM at the OSU Extension Service in the Small Conference Room.  The 2020 Auction Rules have been posted on the 4-H website.

Horse Project Record Page
     All members must submit a COPY of the front page of the Horse Project Record by April 1 for each horse that they have under their care that they are planning to show for the current fair year.  Please remember that those who submit after the deadline, will not be eligible for special awards or state fair, but may be eligible to show at county fair.  Your lease / borrow agreements are also due by April 1.

Horse Workshop
Our next one is “Lead Ropes from Trash and Horse Knots” on Saturday, April 18, 2020 from 9 AM to Noon at the 4-H Building at the fairgrounds.  Please RSVP to kara.orr@oregonstate.edu by April 8.  It is very important that you RSVP so we purchase enough supplies for everyone to make a lead rope.  The workshop will be canceled if a minimum of 10 members is not met.  

Horse Committee Meeting
     The next Horse Committee meeting is on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at 6:30 PM at the OSU Extension Service.  All horse leaders are encouraged to attend.

Annual Bunker Hill Trail Ride 2020 
     Our 4-H Horse Committee is preparing for their annual trail ride fundraiser to be held on Saturday, August 8, 2020.  The ride will be held at Olson Quarter Horses, 31187 Dowd Rd in St. Helens.  A 7 mile ride, with multiple shortcuts!  The first rider out will be at 9 AM.  Several different raffles will be onsite (donations, baskets, 50/50).  Tickets are $1/ticket or 6 for $5; one free with ride fee.   The cost is $10 for 4-H members and leaders; $15 rider fee; $40 family fee.  Concessions provided by our wonderful, local, food cart Hacienda Las Juanitas!
     Each 4-H Horse Club is asked to donate a basket for the fundraiser.  Please turn them in before county fair at the OSU Extension Service.

Small Animal – Road to County Fair
     Please plan to attend this great educational opportunity and pre-fair for small animal members, parents and leaders on Saturday, April 25, 2020 from 9 AM to Noon at the Columbia County Fairgrounds in St. Helens.  Mark your calendars and watch your email for more details and registration information.

mEGGa Egg Hunt Petting Zoo
     The mEGGa Easter Egg Hunt Petting Zoo is Saturday, April 11 at the Sheep barn at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. All participants need to be there between 7:30-8 AM to set up. 
     We are looking for 4-H members who are willing to participate in the petting zoo both with animals and without. Animals we would like you to bring are listed below.  Members without animals can be very helpful by assisting others and there will be extra animals there they can participate with.

4-H County Fair
     Remember the June 1 deadline for all County Fair entry forms.  We will be sending a newsletter out at the end of April that will be all about County Fair with links to the Fair Book and forms.

Made in 4-H Sale
     New this year for county fair!  All 4-H static project members are eligible.  It will be a silent auction format.  Youth will be eligible to sell one static item that falls under one of these four categories:  Leathercraft / Wood Science; Fiber Arts / Clothing / Knitting / Crocheting; Food Preservation; and Framed Art / Framed Photography.  There is a $5 entry fee per member.  Only the top 15 items will be chosen for the sale.  The sale will be on Friday, July 17th from Noon to 8 PM in the pavilion.  Watch for the application and more information next month.  The application will be due June 1.  If you have questions, please email kara.orr@oregonstate.edu.

Columbia County 4-H Scholarship Summary 2020
     “William E. Durrant”- a $500 scholarship.  The completed scholarship packet is due into the OSU Extension Service by April 1.  The packet will include an application form, supplemental questions, letters of recommendation; and you will need to provide your school transcript.  William E.      “Columbia County 4-H Association Memorial Scholarship” - a $500 scholarship.  The completed packet is due into the OSU Extension Service by April 1.  The packet requires information on your 4-H projects, goals achieved in 4-H, 4-H experiences, growth through the 4-H program, how 4-H has directed your future, your qualifications for the scholarship and where the scholarship will be used.  Memorial Scholarship Application
     "Syble Markus Memorial Scholarship" - a $500 scholarship.  The completed scholarship packet is due into the OSU Extension Service by April 1.  The packet will include an application form, personal essay, letters of recommendation, and you will need to provide your school transcript.  Syble Markus Memorial Scholarship Application   
     “Aplet Family Scholarship” – The 4-H Aplet Family Scholarship is awarded each year to one Columbia County student to pursue a degree at Oregon State University (students can attend the OSU Corvallis Campus, Cascades Campus, or local community college through the OSU Dual Degree Program).  Scholarship applicants must have participated in the Columbia County 4-H Youth Development program.  Preference will be given to applicants who will be majoring in business, finance, or a closely related field.  This is a multi-year scholarship of $1,250 per year for up to 4 years ($5,000 total award).  Completed application packets are due by May 1, 2020.  Aplet Family Scholarship
