Member Spotlight

Seth Berkman is excited to attend his first KAAN conference this summer in Denver, where he will be hosting a panel on "Identifying Through Sport." The idea emanated from his 2019 book, A Team of Their Own: How an International Sisterhood Made Olympic History (Hanover Square Press), which chronicled the story of the 2018 Korean Olympic women's hockey team.

The team is most well-known for being the first Olympic team featuring athletes from North and South Korea. But there were also six Korean-American/Korean-Canadian players, including one adoptee. Seth was born in Seoul, and adopted by a family in NJ, and a focus of the book centers on these North Americans discovering their heritage by representing Korea. Seth’s first trip back to Korea came in February 2018, when he traveled to Seoul and then PyeongChang/Gangneung for the Winter Olympics.

Seth has been a contributing reporter at the New York Times since 2012, where he often reports on perceptions of Asian athletes. Previously, he's covered education, business, and religion for more than 50 publications online and in print, including ESPN and The New Yorker. Seth currently lives in New York and enjoys running, playing pickleball, and baking pies. His favorite ice cream is pistachio, his favorite book is Anna Karenina, and his favorite movie is In the Mood for Love.
