Message from Bernadette Gargano, Vice Dean for Student Affairs

Dear Students,

Many of you may be understandably concerned about the impact of the novel coronavirus/COVID-19 in the University setting. Our law school has always made Student Health and Wellness a priority.  We understand your concerns, and we have planned.

We are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of our law school community and to plan for continuity in courses and services should it be needed.

The best place to find information? Visit the University’s Coronavirus website devoted to this issue. It is continually updated to bring you the latest information and available student resources, including school-related travel restrictions.

Seek medical assistance if you need it. If you are worried about your medical health, contact UB Student Health Services at 716-829-3316 or your family doctor.  If you are sick, stay home and update us via email.

If you are traveling during the spring break, please carefully consider your travel plans, keeping in mind:
  • The University is strongly recommending that UB faculty, staff and students avoid traveling to any region, domestic or abroad, that is impacted by the virus.
  • UB and SUNY have canceled all campus-sponsored travel to impacted countries for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester.
  • This is a fluid situation, particularly with respect to international travel. CDC and government guidance will be updated as circumstances change. Anyone who chooses to travel to an impacted region may be subject to quarantine or self-isolation upon their return.
  • Re-entry into the US for visa-holders may become more difficult, or even be restricted, depending on the country(ies) visited and the level of outbreak.
Take reasonable precautions. The same steps that help to prevent the flu also help to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, we should all:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, if soap and water are not available.
Be prepared. There are many resources available to you, including those listed on our Resource Guide.
  • If you are experiencing anxiety or stress, contact UB Counseling at 716-645-2720 for a same-day appointment. Once you have an initial appointment, you can ask to see Thom Neill, our counselor, located in the law school at 501 O’Brian.
  • Crisis Services is available at 716-834-3131.
We are here to help you prepare and to plan. If you have additional questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at 716-645-6223 or gargano@buffalo.edu.

Wishing you all a safe and relaxing spring break,

Bernadette Gargano
