Updates from the Legislature

Huge Victory for Democrats!

Last Week, House Bill 538 passed 38 to 32 votes and successfully passed out of Senate Health & Welfare 3 to 6. This legislation would require tobacco retailers in the state to carry permits. This bill would also amend the Prevention of Minors Access to Tobacco Act to include electronic smoking devices in its definition of tobacco products.
The purpose of this legislation is to prevent tobacco from readily available to children. 10% of minors are now smoking tobacco products, and some start as early as age 11. Big tobacco companies intentionally create marketing campaigns targeted towards children. There is a misconception out there that vaping is a safe alternative to cigarettes. Vaping products have a much higher concentration of nicotine than regular cigarettes, making them much more addictive. As legislators, we need to take steps to enhance our regulation of this product within our state, and that includes identify who is selling the product as well as requiring online age verification tools for companies wanting to sell to Idaho residents.

Inspiring Idaho Women

As the United States celebrates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. constitution, every state has their very unique stories to honor the many suffragettes and their history.

Inspired Idaho women were no different. March 13, 2020 Idaho Women Legislators joined the Governor and First Lady Little to celebrate the many unique and wonderful stories as we kicked off. “Idaho Women 100” events.  Girl Scouts of Silver Sage and local students rung several bells to kick off a year of unforgettable stories and courage. IDAHO CORONAVIRUS WEBSITE AND UPDATE

March 13, Governor Little Declared a State of Emergency.  This declaration frees up necessary funds to help provide for critical services. Last week, Governor Little announced that there is a new website for the public to access updated information: https://coronavirus.idaho.gov/.  An appropriation of $2 Million from the legislature was approved to go toward coronavirus prevention, testing and containment procedures. An additional $4.5 Million from the federal government is also expected to assist with Idaho’s prevention and containment measures.

Prevention and precaution are still recommended. Wash your hands regularly, for 20 seconds, limit touching your face, and if you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue. If you aren’t feeling well, stay home and do your part to not spread this or any virus. It is believed that to spread the disease, you need to be in close contact with someone who has the disease, that means living with someone who has the disease, working with infected individuals or being within 6 feet of someone who is contagious for greater that 10 minutes.

If you have any concerns or think you might be infected, contact your local health provider or health district, Central Public Health. https://cdhd.idaho.gov/dac-coronavirus.php . 208-321-2222 or call 2-1-1 from anywhere in Idaho.
