$500,000 support fund for coronavirus-affected Port Stephens tourism and business

The embattled Port Stephens tourism and business sectors are breathing a little easier today after Council last night endorsed up to $500,000 funding for initiatives to support these industries that have taken an economic hit in the wake of the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

In a notice of motion brought forward by Mayor Ryan Palmer, Council endorsed the Port Stephens Tourism and Business Support Fund, which pledges to allocate up to $500,000 from the Holiday Parks and Property Reserves.

“The tourism industry is worth $621 million to our area every year and it is estimated that up to 20% of the workforce could be lost over the next 12 months,” Mayor Palmer said.

“The effects these impacts will have on the Port Stephens economy and our whole community are significant and the Port Stephens Tourism and Business Support Fund will allow Council to respond with agility during this volatile time to provide support to these industries as they need it.

“We’ll work with Destination Port Stephens to support and fund destination marketing, we’ll work in partnership with the business community to implement additional strategies required to reduce the impact of this unfolding crisis.” Mayor Palmer said.

“I’m committed, with the support of the Councillors and staff, to increase investment in attracting and supporting events in Port Stephens and we will actively pursue Government grants available to support the tourism industry now and into the future,” Mayor Palmer said.

PSC's own makes her AFLW debut

A HUGE congratulations to Port Stephens Council’s very own Civil Projects Engineer, Sarah Halvorsen, who made her AFLW debut with the Greater Western Sydney Giants last weekend. The Giants took home the win against Richmond 56-11 and Sarah scored her first goal and no doubt thousands of new fans.

Giants AFL Women’s Coach, Alan McConnell, has commented on Sarah’s devotion to the sport saying "She’s a young woman who commutes, every time we train, from Newcastle, she has made an amazing commitment to become a semi-professional footballer”.

Sarah is a dedicated and valued member of our team we're very proud of all her achievements on and off the field. Join us in cheering her on this season!

New amenities make King Park accessible for all

The Raymond Terrace Netball accessible amenities have been refurbished thanks to the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. $200,000 has been allocated to King Park Regional Sports Complex for the construction of 3 all-access amenities, as well as a ramp and pathways.

Raymond Terrace marks the completion of the first of these 3 projects and opens opportunities for more people to be involved in sport and recreation.

Anna Bay bags rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day

On Sunday 1 March, Anna Bay residents set their sights on cleaning up Hannah Reserve and the local beach surroundings in an effort to make the place even more beautiful for the whole community.

These waste warriors came back with lots of soft plastic rubbish, an old table and chairs setting - they even bagged the front bumper of a car!
