Dear Friend,

It’s hard to believe that 18 months have passed and those responsible for the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi have gone unpunished.

At a press conference last Tuesday, alongside Senator Ron Wyden, Congressman Tom Malinowski and Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, I called on the Trump administration to stop using the pretext of national security to stonewall Congress’ efforts to seek #JusticeForJamal.

I reminded the audience that murderers do not deserve the protection of the US government.

For over a year, the Trump administration has blocked efforts by NGOs and Congress to hold those responsible for Jamal’s death accountable. Most recently, the administration failed to properly comply with the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act that required the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to submit an unclassified report to Congress that names the individuals responsible for ordering his killing.

Hatice Cengiz also spoke at the press conference and demanded the truth about the circumstances surrounding Jamal’s death.

I am outraged that not only has the Saudi government faced no serious consequences for the murder of a US-based journalist, but instead has been given the presidency of this year’s Group of 20 summit. This is unacceptable.

RSF USA will be tireless in bringing attention to Saudi Arabia’s abhorrent record on press freedom, including Jamal’s murder and the 30 journalists arbitrarily detained in the country.

I am committed to holding the Saudi government accountable and ask you to stand with me in this effort.

Please call your senators and representatives and urge them to join Senator Wyden and Congressman Malinowski in demanding the declassification of the DNI report.

I also want to take this opportunity to ask you to donate to RSF USA. Your support is what makes our work seeking justice for journalists like Jamal Khashoggi possible.

Sincerely,

Dokhi Fassihian
Executive Director, RSF USA
