Takutai Kāpiti – thank you!
A big thank to all those who joined us at the Takutai Kāpiti: Climate Change and our Coast Summit on Sunday. We officially launched the Takutai Kāpiti project, which will bring together a wide range of voices from across our community, recognising the values and knowledge of our indigenous people, to develop solutions and ways of adapting to coming change along the district’s coastline.

Talking responsible camping
This summer we've been out and about, talking with freedom campers to help us get a better understanding of the Kāpiti camping scene.
We're learning some interesting things about these campers, including where they're from, how long they tend to stay, and what draws them to Kāpiti. This information will help us as a Council and community make good decisions about how we manage what is a very real part of the New Zealand tourism offering.

Sportsbank
Kāpiti's new Community Sports Bank opened on Saturday, with fabulous donations of equipment and games for kids at Mazengarb Reserve.
The Sports Bank aims to reduce and eliminate the cost of equipment for those who need it to increase sport participation. You can donate good-quality used equipment at a number of locations across the district.

Fancy a cuppa for Neighbours Day?
Strong neighbourhoods make healthier more resilient communities; why not make new connections and hold a fun local get-together this Neighbours Day, with the support of the Council?
Neighbours Day events will be springing up all over New Zealand from Friday 27 March to Sunday 5 April. To run an 'Over the Fence Cuppa' or local event, and receive a goodie bag to help, email Neighbours.Day@kapiticoast.govt.nz by 20 March, or visit Neighbours Day for more info.

Changes coming for plastic recycling
From 1 May, your kerbside collector will collect only plastic types 1, 2 and 5 for recycling. Plastics 1, 2 and 5 include 87 percent of plastics, and can be recycled in New Zealand into useful products. Types 3, 4, 6 and 7 used to be shipped overseas, but are no longer accepted by most global markets.
Kerbside collectors will be in touch with their customers; there is no change to other types of recycling the collectors will take.

Movin’ March
Movin’March is a month-long celebration encouraging schools across the Wellington region to celebrate all the great things about making an active journey to school.
Our Transport Safety Coordinator Bruce Johnson supports Kāpiti schools in participating and says "the sheer look of delight on kids’ faces when they’re active at any time – but especially during Movin’March – is reward in itself."

Paraparaumu community earthquake drill
Our friends at WREMO (Wellington Regional Emergency Management) are holding a Community Earthquake Drill in Paraparaumu on Saturday 14 March, at the Kāpiti Community Centre from 10.30am–12 noon. Come along to learn how your local hub will operate in an emergency, and help build a strong, resilient community. It's a free, family-friendly event, and all are welcome.

We’re proud to sponsor this year’s Wellington Gold Awards. These awards celebrate business excellence and enterprise in the Wellington region and we’re keen to see as many Kāpiti Coast businesses as possible shining their lights brightly at these awards.  Parks Week 2020, finishing with Park to Path
7–15 March
Parks Week is an annual celebration of the important role parks play – for people, communities, and the natural environment. It encourages greater use of Kāpiti’s many parks and promotes the healthy parks, healthy people message. We have a busy week of free events across Kāpiti, ending with an all-ages run/walk from 8.30am in Otaraua Park, Otaihanga on 15 March. Booking is essential as spaces are limited. Pop into Waikanae Pool or phone 04 2934516 for registration and more information. This event is for Council-registered dogs only. Dog must be under direct control of their owners at all times. Please remember your leads and poo bags to clean up after your dog!
