Lion Rock's Newsletter
There have been many recent news stories about "anti-competitive" behaviour in Hong Kong. Despite the lack of an evidence-based approach, the Government is pushing hard on the competition bill, trying to get it passed before the Legco elections in 2012. The Lion Rock Institute will stand firm and keep fighting against this legislation, which would very seriously undermine the business environment in Hong Kong.
There is also a bitter battle playing out the medical industry. The Hospital Authority insist on importing overseas doctors to tackle the problem of shortage of doctors in Hong Kong, despite strong opposition from the Medical Council. The Lion Rock Institute will continue to fight hard against any form of protectionism, as evidenced in the Medical Council's strategy, protectionism which has led to a decline in our medical system after 1997.
The Lion Rock's Roar
In LRI's weekly column in HKEJ, Peter Wong talked about the history Penang. The free trade policy in the colonial period made Penang one of the most prosperous cities along the Strait of Malacca. However, after the colonial period, protectionism and the brain drain destroyed most of that. Peter hopes that Hong Kong is not following the same path as Penang.
In an appearance on i-cable TV, Simon Lee talked about how the bureaucracy in our education system destroys the curiosity of children, the next generation. Spoon-feeding education is causing anorexia of knowledge among students, he said.
In his personal column in AM730, Andrew Shuen talked about the new policy of "Hostels for Single Youths", announced in the policy address not long ago. Andrew said that this policy is not going to help the youth, but create another base of "useless youth". Making them being less productive, and encouraging them to ask for government help, instead of being independent when they encounter problems.
