GUIRR WEBINAR TODAY

Creating Supportive Institutions and Providing Effective Mentorship in STEMM

GUIRR will host a webinar to discuss ways for institutions to strategically enhance the effectiveness of mentorship practices in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM), based on the findings and recommendations of a recent National Academies report. Mentorship is widely recognized as important in the development of STEMM professionals and supporting diversity in STEMM fields, but the study and evaluation of mentorship has not received the same attention as other aspects of professional development. Instead, mentoring is often left to happen organically or on an ad hoc basis. Institutions have a critical role to play in creating cultures that approach mentorship as a learnable skill that can be supported, incentivized, and evaluated to realize the full potential of its effectiveness. Likewise, these institutions—and the research ecosystem at large—can gain significant value from improving mentorship effectiveness through enhanced mentee outcomes and greater STEMM retention.

Please join GUIRR for a discussion about the role of institutions in creating a culture of mentorship to improve STEMM mentoring practices with Christiane Spitzmueller, Professor of Psychology at the University of Houston, and Maria Lund Dahlberg, Program Officer at the National Academies.

There is no cost to this webinar, but registration is requiredA confirmation email will be issued prior to the event containing the webinar URL.

The National Academies Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (CWSEM) invites you to attend a Symposium on Addressing the Underrepresentation of Women in STEMM on March 19th. This event is now being held entirely virtually - you can watch the proceedings on the CWSEM website. The event will feature presentations of the latest research and in-depth discussion with experts and leaders on the state of knowledge on the range of issues addressed in a new consensus study.
