Fighting Back Against Coronavirus

My staff and I have been closely monitoring the current worldwide situation and development of coronavirus (COVID-19) to guarantee we are doing everything we can to protect Texans – a responsibility I take very seriously.

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) have been closely working together with numerous state health agencies to provide the public with educational materials on how to stay safe, including the most up to date information on research and treatment. DSHS is also taking further measures to assist in disinfection procedures in specific places such as driver's license facilities and schools, while working to ensure that those in high-risk communities are trained, equipped and prepared.

As a result of past public health threats, including the Swine Flu (H1N1) and Ebola, the State of Texas has spent years formulating response plans and preparing for all contingencies.  Texas Governor Abbott is prepared to act to implement state resources as they are needed.  For more details and regular updates about the State’s response to coronavirus, you can access the DSHS website here.

At this time, there is no vaccine to prevent coronavirus.  To avoid exposure, the CDC recommends adopting similar precautions as you have used in the past to avoid the flu.  These fundamental steps include:

  • Frequently washing your hands with soap for a duration of at least 20 seconds;
  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing;
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick;
  • If you experience flu-like symptoms, please stay home!

For more information about prevention and treatment programs, I encourage you to visit the CDC website here.

In regards to facemasks, the CDC recommends that you DO NOT wear mask unless you show symptoms of COVID-19.

What To Do If You Believe You Have COVID-19

If you experience fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, and you have traveled to China (or another region of the world encountering significant cases of COVID-19), been exposed to a sick traveler from China (or another active COVID-19 country), or been exposed to person with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, you should contact your healthcare provider.  Be sure to call ahead before going to your doctor's office or emergency room to prevent any potential spread.
