Directors Guild of America

The AFI Directing Workshop for Women is the longest-running program dedicated to supporting women and gender nonbinary narrative directors. Committed to providing opportunities for marginalized genders, DWW annually mentors eight filmmakers through the production cycle of a short film, providing hands-on instruction with classes led by industry experts. Since 1974, the program has trained over 350 filmmakers who do more than direct film and television – they push the boundaries of storytelling and its creative process.

BADASS SHORT FORM FILMMAKER OF THE WEEK:
Daryl Paris Bright

Hailing from the DMV Metro area, Daryl graduated from Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Carnegie Mellon University, where she majored in Drama. She developed a passion for devised original work and Drama for Social Change when she collaborated with Dramatic Adventure Theatre, performing original work in Eastern Europe and Tanzania. Now based in NYC, Daryl helps run CNT Productions as Co-CEO. Daryl strives to create spaces for the nuanced stories of underrepresented voices not only in mainstream media, but throughout her community.

"Black Girl Poem" has gained worldwide recognition including HBO’s Inspiration Room, the American Black Film Festival, and AT&T’s Film Awards for New Forms of Storytelling. It also won the audience award at National Film Festival for Talented Youth.

Carly Miller

Founder of Eagle & Child Productions, Carly Miller is a USC film school graduate and accomplished writer/director. In October 2019, she won best director at the Show Low Film Festival for her thirty-minute dramedy Service Road, starring Sarah Navratil of Stargate Origins. Her screenwriting has won her accolades, with her female-driven western Rogue placing as a semifinalist for ScreenCraft's 2019 Film Fund and a quarterfinalist in WeScreenplay's feature contest. She's currently in pre-production on a proof-of-concept for Rogue, which begins filming in April 2020.

Hollywood Reacts To Harvey Weinstein Sentencing: “No Amount Of Jail Time Will Repair The Lives He Ruined”

"Harvey Weinstein’s 23-year prison sentence triggered swift reactions from accusers and other Hollywood figures, who focused not just on the punishment but the impact that it will have on future cases of sexual assault.

The Silence Breakers, a group of two dozen of Weinstein’s accusers that includes Ashley Judd, Rosanna Arquette and Rose McGowan, issued a statement that said that 'Harvey Weinstein’s legacy will always be that he’s a convicted rapist. He is going to jail – but no amount of jail time will repair the lives he ruined, the careers he destroyed, or the damage he has caused.'"

Thank you to these brave women for speaking up and making the industry a safer place.

A Peek Behind the Scenes at 7 Women-Directed Films from the Sundance Labs

"In celebration of Women’s History Month, Sundance.org dug through the Institute’s archives to get the stories behind seven such projects that have since been produced, offering up a peek behind the scenes and celebrating the careers of these groundbreaking women directors. From Marisa Silver’s ’80s debut to ’90s triumphs like Love & Basketball to recent films like Little Woods (which screened at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival), these projects span a wide range of genres and thematic concerns, but have one thing in common: They started take shape one summer at the Sundance Mountain Resort."
