Love Sport? Let's learn about... Fishcare Victoria

Fishing for people with Disabilities

Fishing is one of the most popular recreational activities in Australia. While so many fishers take for granted the opportunity of heading to the water to cast a line, there are often barriers which hinder people with disabilities from being able to do the same.

History of inclusive fishing

Fishcare Victoria has conducted informal and ad hoc all ability fishing clinics since 2006 in an unfunded and volunteer run and coordinated program. Now, improved facilities and access to our aquatic environments, as well as the 2019 VFA ‘Fishing for All’ initiative, have led to an increased appetite for all ability clinics.

Fishcare sees a great opportunity to commit to and lead the development of a well-resourced and sustainable all ability fishing program, formalising partnerships with disability providers, agencies, and local councils to improve opportunities and access to the excitement and reward of fishing.

FishAbility - Fishing is for everyone
We are now proud to announce 'FishAbility - fishing is for everyone' by Fishcare Victoria; an all ability fishing program that aims to increase the active involvement of people with disabilities into recreational fishing, through coordinated and regular volunteer supported fishing events.
The program is underway, and to date we have conducted clinics at Albert Park Lake, Station Pier, Port Melbourne, Mornington Pier, Westernport Bay, Tooradin backwaters, Lilydale Lake, and Geelong with aims to extend clinics into the Maribyrnong River, Cherry Lake, Shepparton, Ballarat, and Nagambie areas.

International Women's Day

With International Women’s Day, FishAbility see a wonderful opportunity to engage women in the sport of recreational fishing and are excited to begin working with the Women in Recreational Fishing network (WIRF).
Women in Recreational Fishing network
This network is passionate about “bringing women together within the recreational fishing community” and linked to the Target One Million drive to increase participation, and get one million Victorians fishing by 2020. WIRF creates a space for women of all backgrounds, experience levels, abilities, and ages to connect and share in their love of fishing.
Chloe Molloy is one of AFL’s rising stars, and a Recreational Fishing Ambassador. In her spare time, Chloe enjoys wetting a line and supporting other women to give fishing a try.

As a talented and driven young athlete who is already inspiring more women to take part in sport, Chloe is the perfect person to increase diversity and participation in fishing.

See more about Chloe's role as an ambassador here
FishAbility is looking forward to engaging more women with disabilities in regular fishing activities to build a safe, happy, and inclusive environment where women feel supported and respected in sport. This event will be held in April 2020.
