AIS-Salzburg Newsletter

Dear AIS-Salzburg Community,

The wife of the second President of the United States, Abigail Adams once wrote, 'Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.` As the students of AIS-Salzburg depart for the Spring Vacation, the required ardor and diligence requirements are probably close to the last things on their mind.  However, with the advent of the Coronavirus crisis here in Europe, we have had to leave an open end to our Spring Break with the establishment of online lessons a distinct possibility two weeks from now.  Whether in the classroom in Salzburg, Austria or at home assisted by technology, the conditions may change, but the requirements of ardor and diligence still apply.

We hope you enjoy this week's newsletter.

Student Spotlight

This student interview features Nicol C., who first came to AIS-Salzburg in 2014 as a 7th grader. Nicol is currently in her senior year and is set to graduate this May. Upon graduation, Nici plans to study communications at an Austrian university, either in Salzburg or Vienna.

In the Classroom

Advanced Placement Bio students modeling DNA replication, RNA transcription and translation, and protein synthesis.

Learning how DNA replicates is tough. Learning how DNA writes RNA and then how RNA makes proteins is tougher. Getting to draw the processes on the tables with markers helps bring it all together.

AIS-Salzburg Kitchen Feature

Oliver, who took over as our kitchen manager this school year, has been serving AIS-Salzburg students delicious meals since 2015. Using his 30 years of experience as a cook, including employment at the Golden Hirsch and Hotel Sacher, both local five-star hotels, Oliver has implemented some ideas and strategies for providing students with a balanced diet while also appealing to their tastes.

Oliver is particularly proud of the fact that when students request a certain meal, he is often able to add it to the upcoming weekly menu quite easily, a benefit to serving a smaller student body.

Some of the featured meals this past week include Wiener Schnitzel, Chilli con Carne, and Turkey Roulade with hash browns and ratatouille. Each meal, both lunch or dinner, has a vegetarian option as well.
