Advocacy, education and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, their family and friends.

Sevastopol SAGA Group Update

From the students:

As a SAGA group, we have three main areas of interest, social, support, and advocacy. Currently, we are focusing on advocacy; one of our plans is to meet with Sevastopol's younger students and have an Acceptance Day. During this event, we hope to spread awarness and acceptance through various engaging activities. We're also planning fundraisers to get more resources for SAGA. One of which is to participate in Open Door Pride. In the future, we hope to bring education and acceptance to everyone. Everyone deserves a safe environment when they're at school.

Gibraltar DAA Update

Our group is larger & stronger than ever.  We did a Valentine's table during the day last week & passed out flyers, stickers & in general commiserated with students passing by, inviting them to join our group.  We had several newcomers that day for our club meeting.  We remain predominantly a support network that gets together & talks about issues that matter to them.  The students say how much that means to them & the significance of this group to their social survival at school.  One favorite activity is a jar into which student pose questions concerning LGBTQ+ issues.  We pull questions & discuss what we know, where to find resources, and what it all means to us.

Trans Day of Visibility 2020: #TRANSKIDS #SOFIERCE

March 31st is Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), and we are asking PFLAGers to show support for trans youth by participating in our #TransKids #SoFierce social media campaign.

The #TransKids #SoFierce campaign is intended to build up trans youth, who powerful people are trying to take down, while letting lawmakers know they can’t get away with it. So far this year, more than 200 bills in 18 states have been proposed to dehumanize LGBTQ+ people. Many of these bills specifically target trans youth—a signal to PFLAGers that trans kids are fierce! They are smart, talented, and the next generation of leaders—and lawmakers are scared.

To participate, take a video or a photo and personalize your message. Then, beginning on March 31st, post, share, and encourage others to share why they think #transkids are #sofierce. For more information, including suggested scripts and posts, vist pflag.org/transkidssofierce.

UWGB Campus Cupboard and Closet

The UWGB Campus Cupboard and Closet is a service that provides food, cleaning, clothing, kitchen and some household items to students who need a little support to help them as they complete their educational goals, or to not take on a second or third job so they can focus on their studies. An average of 45 students use the Cupboard each semester. Some of the students have unusual expenses in which they need support one time, others have limited or no family support and need food, cleaning or school supplies because they have $5 left in their savings after buying gasoline or bus tickets to get to work. Each story is different, but the need is present. https://www.uwgb.edu/cupboard/items-needed/
