Friend, Spring Greetings from KWIC!

KWIC April Newsletter

Dear KWIC members and friends,

We hope this email greeting finds you in good health during this difficult time.

As we express our gratitude and wishes for everyone's safety, we thank everyone that's working together to reduce the spread of Covid19, especially those providing front-line support in our community and communities around the world.

Here at KWIC, we are participating in the collective response to ‘flatten the curve’.
KWIC spring activities are cancelled until further notice.

For many of us this situation has forced us to step back from fast-paced routines and slow down, drive and consume less, breathe more, deepen connections and also to reconsider the gross social inequity that is part of our community fabric; we can imagine how Guaranteed Living Income could have impacted our resilience and response. Looking ahead, how do we resist the comforting narrative that Covid19 is a temporary disruption and that travel, stock markets, life - will eventually get back to normal, when normal has created a climate crisis?

In this newsletter, we’ve noted a couple of interesting readings below which explore this crisis as ‘warm up’ and what we might need to consider post-COVID19 and a few opportunities for action while physical distancing, as well as great education resources and on-line community activities.

Be well & take care....

International Women's Day "Together We Rise"

IWD 2020 Solidarity March on George Street in Downtown Peterborough

Mar 8th marked International Women’s Day. KWIC & KSAC with our community partners hosted a solidarity march and free afternoon program around our 2020 local theme: Together We Rise! We’re grateful to everyone who supported the 2020 event, including the CFGP and the Pilot Gender Equality Fund, numerous community volunteers, guest speakers and community participants.

A
new partnership with TVAN and GrassbootsTheatre this year led to several storytelling and art-based workshops and the creation of the Walks of Life: Through HerStory community art installation

Global International Development Projects

For those of you involved in global international development projects, the Canadian Council for International Collaboration has been convening a collaborative response to COVID19 to request that project funding remains fluid, prioritizes community needs and the most vulnerable during this crisis. KWIC is participating in these conversations through the Ontario Council. If you are interested for more information, please visit the OCIC website for resources and updates: https://www.ocic.on.ca/

On April 2nd, Minister for International Development, Karina Gould, acknowledged the important connection between health and climate action as well as the opportunity of this moment and moving forward.

Free Education Resources
We know that with physical isolation, families and students are facing specific challenges. Here are a couple of resources for inspiring curriculum related lessons and activities:

TRACKS is an educational program which provides hands-on experiences for youth interested in the intersections of Indigenous and western sciences, based out of the Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences Program (IESS) of Trent University, under the umbrella of the Kawartha World Issues Centre and supported by First People's House of Learning.https://www.tracksprogram.ca/online-and-onland-resources-for-families-1

TEACH Outside Box Social Justice Alternative Placement and Program is a collaborative education program designed for emerging and seasoned classroom teachers, and community educators hosted by KWIC in partnership with the Trent School for Education and Professional Learning, TRACKS Youth Program, Nourish Peterborough and New Canadians Centre.https://teachpeterborough.ca/resources/

Camp Kawartha always has great ideas and resources for connecting with Vitamin N (Nature) - which is extremely important in reducing anxiety and stress – although requiring caution and diligence with respect to minimizing activity and physical distancing over the next few weeks. https://campkawartha.ca/blog/
Community Engagement Action Items
Peterborough Youth Empowerment Petition

Last month local students appealed to both school boards to declare a climate emergency that includes several recommendations. KPRDSB did not make a decision at this meeting – it has been referred to senior administration. Students are asking for community support to encourage the board to act on PYE’s recommendation by contacting trustees by phone or email. A nice summary can be found here by Guy Hanchet (4RG): https://forourgrandchildren.ca/blog/2020/03/10/students-urge-school-boards-to-declare-climate-emergency/
