Welcome to the Oregon Region's
March 2020 Newsletter!

Congratulations to all the members who participated in the 2020 Quiz Rally at Canyonview Camp in Silverton. Many of you qualified for modified or regular USPC National Championships and I really hope you will take the opportunity to go to Kentucky and represent the Oregon Region (if you met qualifying criteria you will have received an email from me). Quiz would not have happened without a huge amount of effort behind the scenes and I particularly want to thank Kim and Ailis Ferry, Sheila Hornocker, Tracy Stout, Jocelyn Ehlers, Vanessa McDermott and Michele Stevens for their hours of work leading up to, during and after the event.

The Spring Council meeting on March 7 was a success and your Regional Board members held a productive round table discussion with all the DC’s and CA’s; we really appreciated all the feedback and suggestions and will be discussing your input at our next monthly board meeting.

Asia Thayer ran a fantastic Standards and Certifications Clinic and was able to clearly identify the skills required at each certification level using live demo riders.  The following day, Asia conducted an upper level “teaching to teach” clinic - thank you to Sharon Cooper and Jocelyn Ehlers for organizing this.

Coming up is the Dressage Rally at Devonwood on May 1 - 3 and the invitation and entry form can be found on the ORUSPC website. Please refer regularly to the calendar for information and updates as we have a LOT of exciting events planned and you don’t want to miss a deadline!

Covid19 virus - as of Monday March 16 ORUSPC activities will be suspended until April 1. We hope we can resume normal clinics and rallies then. Please follow all State suggestions and wash your hands frequently and limit your social interactions - this, too, shall pass!

RIC Tip of the Month for the Rider Riding is all about Core Strength. Developing Core Strength is something we do off the horse. Planks are one of the best ways for Equestrians to develop our Core Strength. Try adding into your routine some daily planks. Be sure to watch your alignment of your back so you are using your core muscles to support yourself. Start with a time you can do, say 45 seconds, and do 3 repetitions. As that gets easier, increase the length of time you hold your plank . If you already including Planks in your life, check out this article (https://www.horseillustrated.com/horse-community-core-exercises-for-equestrians ) for Plank variation ideas!

RIC Training Tip of the Month “Remember, whatever you repeat, that is what you are training.” - Asia Thayer.  Every time we work with a horse, whether in-hand or under saddle, we are training it. Be conscience of what you are training your horse to do.

Don’t forget, we are here to be a resource for you. So, don’t hesitate to call / text Joscelyn (619-988-7657) or email (oregonregionric@gmail.com)!

Hello Pony club members,

I wanted to take a minute to explain upper Level clinics.  These are designed to help members heading toward upper level testing to prepare for tests and judge readiness.  That being said, they can be great experiences for all levels. They are taught by National examiners who have an amazing wealth of knowledge and experience to teach our members.

If you have D level members they can benefit greatly by watching the lessons and help hold horses, set jumps etc.  These lessons teach specific skills and aids that are great to expose members to as they are learning to ride up the levels.  Any one attending must show maturity and consideration to the participants and examiners, but if your member likes to learn, they are a great place to do that.

The clinics are designed for members heading toward testing at the national level, but there are often extra spots for others to participate as well.  We have had many C1 members and even strong D3's (with the approval from their DC and jumping C1 levels) attend and have amazing lessons to further their goals.

If you have members that you think might benefit from attending the clinics but have questions please don't hesitate to contact us and we would be happy to talk it over with you.

Volunteer Opportunities

~ Tracy Stout, VRS: Volunteer Coordinator ~

Thank you to all of you who showed up and volunteered at our Quiz Rally last month on Leap Day! It was a great success with a large showing of competitors which was really great to see. I hope for those of you who it was your first Quiz Rally, you were able to get a better sense of the depth and breadth of knowledge that Pony Club has our kiddos learn about horses and horse management. It truly is amazing to watch our kids show off their knowledge. Keep your eye out for the next big volunteering opportunity, Dressage Rally in early May. There may be a few other opportunities here and there with other regional activities as well.

As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns (oregonregionboard@gmail.com, Subject line: Volunteer Coordinator). Thanks in advance for your help!

Region Finances

~ Sabrina McDermott, Treasurer ~

Wow! What a busy start to the year. The Year End duties are complete and I've been busy processing your payments for the HM Clinics, Upper Level Clinics, Quiz, and new/renew Region Dues, as well as all of your Annual Convention Symposium reimbursements. Please let me know if I've missed something for you as things tend to get lost in my personal email at this time. Do send any reimbursement/refund/payment questions to OregonRegionBoard@gmail.com.

If any treasurers are interested in a Zoom Video Meeting to discuss any questions, issues with Central Finance or payments, let me know. I'll be able to share my screen and assist in any way.

As a reminder: Members need to pay their Clubs for events, lessons, certifications, dues. The Club is to write one check to pay the instructor, Region, examiner. This is so it's processed through your CFRS so you can easily pull a report for your 1099 taxes at the end of the year. And so the income/balance statements are correct when we upload at the end of the year. In order to remain nonprofit status, we must be showing that our focus is education, per USPC. So making sure to log in those instructor payments is important!

DC/Treasurers, make sure your members have renewed online via their USPC profile. They must be renewed prior to attending club lessons and Region events. Please also run through your member list and verify that Region dues have been paid. Rally Season is upon us, lets stay up to date! If members are not current via USPC, you will have to have nonmember insurance at events they attend.

I'm sorry I could not attend the Spring Meeting. If anyone has questions regarding 2019 financials, please send an email to the Region account and I'm happy to call/email/zoom/meet in person to discuss. I am looking for a replacement for 2021. If you are interested in this position, it'd be great to start shadowing me. I can Zoom share when I do my duties a couple times so you can see how it works. Essentially, you process checks and paypal for all events, rallies, membership. You write checks to facilities, judges, instructors hired for events. Reimburse volunteers for things purchased for events, such as food for rallies, which you use expense forms and receipts as proof. There are reports (within the CFRS) to be uploaded in November and January to the USPC website. You send 1099s in January as well as file the 990-EZ, 1096 to the IRS. There are monthly Zoom board meetings, and 2 Council meetings a year to attend. We use Google Docs/Sheets for budgets, otherwise things are all contained in the Central Finance Reporting System on the USPC website. It's a lot of behind the scenes data entry. When I cannot attend an event, I mail payments and use the event Organizer to assist with gathering needed info. The Board is great at providing needed support. National as well as past treasurers are willing to help as well. Please consider stepping up to this position. Again, it's great to shadow now, be voted in by Nominating Committee in November and start in January/February.

CLUB NEWS

Canterwood PC: Canterwood Pony Club welcomes one new member this winter, Kennedy! We have three members who are certified at D-1,and we have two left to go. We had two members, Evie and Megan, who attended Quiz Rally. They had an extraordinary amount of fun and their confidence is lifted as they took home 4th place in quiz at the D-1 level! Their teammate Marisa from Blazing Saddles PC became a fast friend, and they are excited to meet again. Dione (parent) froze her hands off working hard in the barn at quiz, where it rained and hailed most of the afternoon. Vanessa and Sabrina worked to help prepare and operate Quiz. It was a great event and we can't wait for next year's challenge!

Highlakes PC:
Congratulations to Zack, Jackie and Elora for representing High Lakes at the 2020 quiz rally and coming in 2nd! All three did a great job and demonstrated their knowledge well in all 5 phases. Thank you to Kasey Moore, Linda Bland and Leslie Gill for your hard work preparing the kids for quiz, we truly appreciate everything you do for our club.

Highland Riders PC:  Our members had a great time at Quiz Rally. A BIG Thank You to everyone in our region who make all our great rallies possible! Also a big thank you to Sheila Hornocker for hosting such a great HM Clinic this month. Congrats to Kayla, Kaellie, and Rory on earning your D1 rating!
Please join us for our annual Dressage Show Fundraiser this month. It's a fun show for riders of all ages and abilities and great practice for Dressage Rally!

Iron Horse CA: Iron Horse PCRC had lots happening at the beginning of this year already! Congrats to our 8 members who competed at Quiz rally and were successful in testing their knowledge. I'm bummed to have missed it personally (so I could beat Amy as usual ;) )! Looking forward to all the events that the region is putting on for members this year! We also have a new C1 HM, Amy, and 3 new D3 HMs, Regina, Marie and Maya. We will be hosting a LOT of certifications this year as we have 7 new members to get caught up. Starting to plan for members to get involved with the upper level testing in the next year or two!

Oregon Trail PC:  February was another busy month for Oregon Trail - mounted lessons, great unmounted topics and several quiz study sessions! We had all 6 youth members of our club participate in Quiz Rally, and their studying paid off :) What a fun event and a big thanks to all of the organizers! We also had a bake sale during rally, and would like to thank everyone who bought yummy treats - we hope you enjoyed them and we appreciate your support!
