POSTPONED: SATURDAY'S RECEPTION FOR THE TIME OF THINGS
The exhibition continues, but the reception and artist talk is rescheduled
Exhibition runs March 14 to May 9

"Gestation" by Inuvialuit artist Maureen Bruben will be part of the upcoming exhibition at the Comox Valley Art Gallery

Friends,

We're postponing the reception and artist/curator talk planned for Saturday, March 14.

But the good news is that the exhibition THE TIME OF THINGS: THE CONTINUUM OF INDIGENOUS CUSTOMARY PRACTICES INTO CONTEMPORARY ART will continue to be open to the public from March 14 to May 9.

We're hoping to reschedule the reception and talk on Saturday, April 25, at 1pm. Please stay tuned for details and confirmation.

This exhibition is guest curated by visual artist, curator and researcher France Trépanier. As France describes:

“THE TIME OF THINGS proposes to challenge the binary of traditional and contemporary art. It considers the continuum of Indigenous customary practices into contemporary Indigenous art through the work of five women artists – Daphne Boyer, Maureen Gruben, Susan Pavel, Skeena Reece, and Marika Echachis Swan. Through their various Indigenous perspectives, this exhibition explores how the concept of time informs the production of Indigenous art today. It looks at how time influences connections to materials and process and it delves into the influence of intergenerational memory and knowledge passed through time on art-making."

CVAG is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free, and donations are gratefully accepted.

CALL FOR WATER SAMPLES

When you come the Gallery, we invite you to bring a sample of water from a source that is meaningful to you.

Since January we've been running WATER (re)SOURCE,  a community incubator project that invites community participation. During the this ongoing project we are encouraging people to provide us with water samples from various locations in the Comox Valley, along with notes, stories, essays or poems about why the water source is meaningful. We have had a positive response, so we're keeping the project going in the CVAG COMMUNITY SPACE. Small water sample bottles are available at CVAG or bring in your own container. An art making station is also available for making a contribution to accumulating repository for water.

One of the most interesting items we received was a water sample from Russia. It was sent to us by Claire Sanford, originally from Texada Island and currently residing in Siberia. She filled a vodka bottle with water from
Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world. You can read Claire's short essay, and view all the other submissions, while WATER (re)SOURCE runs until May 9.
