The novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has placed the World in a specially challenging time. The PEEX Headquarters wish everyone to remain safe during these times. It is moment to rearrange the way we work, communicate and collaborate. But also to strengthen it. PEEX HQ will continue to work building our PEEX community through this strenuous situation. 
PEEX signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
The new MoU was signed with the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics SB, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). The MoU is a bilateral document to encourage the development of the PEEX program in Europe, Russia and China.
Arctic Urbanization Workshop
PEEX HQ hosted the Arctic Urbanization Workshop on 14-15 January 2020 in Kumpula Campus at University of Helsinki, Finland. The aim is to establish a series of studies around the Arctic in cities that represent different environments and conditions. Read more.

 
Russian Academy of Science visit Finland
Prof. Alexei Gvishiani, Geophysical Center of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) visited the SMEAR II station in Hyytiälä, Finland on 4.Feb. During his visit further collaboration between INAR (Univ Helsinki) and PEEX were discussed.
PEEX at the online EGU 2020
Due to Covid19 pandemic, the EGU General Assembly 2020 conference will be held online as  "Sharing Geoscience Online (#shareEGU20)".

Further information on the PEEX meeting will follow after we have detailed instructions from the EGU conference committee.

All authors have been invited to contribute to a PEEX Special Issue with the work included in the PEEX session abstracts.
PEEX Moscow Office visits PEEX-HQ, Helsinki
Assoc. Prof. Sergey Chalov from the Faculty of Geography of the Lomonosov Moscow State University (LMSU, Moscow, Russia)  visited the PEEX-HQ and University of Helsinki, Finland, in a mobility exchange visit on 17-21.Feb. The visit was funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education (FIRST+ 2019-2020, Finnish-Russian Student and Teacher Mobility Programme) and is part of the PEEX-Academic Challenge networking project. Arctic Policies and Strategies-Analysis, Synthesis, and Trends
The scientific report Arctic Policies and Strategies – Analysis, Synthesis and Trends delivers a holistic analysis of the policies, strategies, and declarations of the relevant Arctic stakeholders. The analysis, using quantitative and qualitative methods, is based on a coding of the text of 56 policy documents (in 1996-2019). See the abstract brochure.

Upcoming science education events under the PEEX umbrella
The PEEX programme in collaboration with other projects (AoF ClimEco, FIRST+ PEEX-AC, Horizon-2020 iCUPE and INTAROS, RSF MegaCity) and Russian partners (from St.Petersburg, Tyumen, and Moscow) has been arranging science education oriented events such as the Research Training Intensive course (St. Petersburg) and the Young Scientists Summer School (Moscow) for 2020.

Mercury concentrations at Russian Arctic station "Amderma"
For the first time in the Russian Arctic the long-term (15 year period; 2001-2015) series of gaseous elementary mercury concentration in the surface layer of the atmosphere at the polar station “Amderma” had been measured. Read more.
MOSAiC: onboard the largest Arctic expedition in history
It isn’t called the “largest Arctic expedition in History” for nothing. Last September 2019, the first group of researchers embarked on Leg 1 of the 1-year long expedition that will drift across the Arctic for a project aimed at better understanding climate change in the Arctic. Read more.

The Erasmus+ MODEST project aims at modernization of doctoral education in science in European countries and Armenia, Belarus, and Russia. It aims to enhance cooperation capacities of Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) of Partner Countries in the field of Doctoral Studies. Read more.
Impact of climate change on the water balance of the Ferghana Valley
The Ferghana Valley (Central Asia) is a highly-populated and semi-arid region, where is a high demand for the agricultural sector. Therefore, water is crucial for the livelihood here. Read more.
Regional-urban scale modeling of aerosols feedbacks in metropolitan areas of Russia and Finland
The aerosols influence on meteorological parameters was valuated with the Enviro-HIRLAM (Environment – HIgh Resolution Limited Area Model) online integrated modelling system on territories of North-West Russia and bordering countries. Read more.
Suspended sediment load formation in small mountain river basins
Suspended sediment yield values from mountain catchments are often among the highest in the world. Nonetheless, the sediment sinks, sources and dynamics can be highly variable in such environments under climate change. Read more of this PhD thesis summary.

The ASSW2020 (27 March - 2 April) has now moved to Online conference only!
No in-person session will occur due to the covid-19 virus outbreak. Read more.
2nd Annual Meeting of Arctic Avenue
The meeting will be held at the Kilpisjärvi Research Station, Finland, 10-12.August 2020. The full 3-day programme will consist of talks (with a focus on Arctic Avenue projects), visits to field study sites and excursions in the Kilpisjärvi area. Read more.
Arctic Circle 2020
The Arctic Circle Secretariat is now accepting proposals for Sessions at the 2020 Arctic Circle Assembly to be held October 8-11, 2020, in Reykjavík, Iceland. Submissions will be accepted until May 1, 2020.
Smart and Sustainable Cities (SSC-2020) Conference
 SCC-2020 will be held in Moscow, Russia on July 8-10 2020. This year’s theme for the conference will be "Advanced technologies for sustainable development of urban green infrastructure". Read more.

US Study Abroad Group visit Finland
SIT Study Abroad Group of PhD students on environmental science from various states of USA visited University of Helsinki to hear about the work on aerosols, air quality and the PEEX initiative. Their visit to Helsinki also included talks at the Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Finnish Meteorological Institute. The talks and trip was arranged by Prof. Lassi Heininen who is leading the UArctic Geoplotics thematic network and Calotte Academy in collaboration with PEEX.

Future Earth launched the report, Our Future on Earth 2020, on February 6, 2020.

Our Future on Earth 2020 report aims to tell the story of where we are on our collective journey by connecting the dots between what society is currently experiencing – from fires to food shortages to a rise in populism – with recent developments in the research community. Read more.
