Question about your recent eBird observations in Wisconsin
View this email in your browser
Hello Wisconsin Birder,

As part of finalizing the atlas database, we are looking to remove hide status from observations you hid that no longer need to be hidden. Having them hidden essentially invalidates them, and makes it more difficult to get this information into the atlas.

When the atlas began, we advised hiding several rare species. However, since eBird implemented Sensitive Species functionality, most of these species are now automatically hidden in eBird, so you can safely unhide the checklist that contains them.

Please review this email and unhide these checklists if hiding is no longer needed. We cannot unhide your checklists on this end.

Here are your hidden checklists during the atlas period:

<<Checklist1>>
<<Checklist2>>
<<Checklist3>>
<<Checklist4>>
<<Checklist5>>
<<Checklist6>>

1. First, figure out if the species on the checklist(s) is a sensitive species. If it is already a sensitive species, we ask that you unhide it (and the built-in sensitive species protections will keep it from displaying to the public).

In Wisconsin, the following potential breeders are automatically obscured due to their status as Sensitive Species in Wisconsin:

Wisconsin Sensitive Species

Sensitive year-round in Wisconsin

Great Gray Owl
Sharp-tailed Grouse
Piping Plover
Whooping Crane
Kirtland’s Warbler

Sensitive seasonally in Wisconsin

Northern Goshawk (March 1 – August 1)
Long-eared Owl (November 1 – April 15)
King Rail (May 15 – August 1)
Loggerhead Shrike (May 15 – August 15)
2. If it is not a sensitive species, consider these two questions:
  • Is it likely this specific location will continue to be used by this species? (i.e. will they be renesting at this site?)
  • Is it a rare-enough species that people might come look for it and disturb it?

We recommend you keep checklists hidden only if you answer "yes" to both of these questions. Otherwise, please unhide the checklist.

If you have any questions about whether a specific record should remain hidden, feel free to contact us at atlas@wsobirds.org.

3. How to unhide a checklist:

1. Click the checklist link in the gray box at the beginning of this email.

2. Note that there is a message on the checklist that it is a hidden checklist.

3. Click the "Checklist Tools" button on the top right of your checklist, then scroll down on the menu and click on "Show in eBird Output". If done successfully, the message indicating this is a hidden checklist should vanish, and you're done!
Thanks for your understanding! And thanks for contributing to a project that will provide important information to help conserve Wisconsin’s birds.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at atlas@wsobirds.org, and we can help out.

Thanks!
