Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

Instead of giving me money, forward this email to friends and tell them to click on this link to subscribe.
I’ve got two significant milestones within four weeks. Today is numero ichi. (That's Spapanese for #1.)

This is the 100th edition of the Podcast Gumbo newsletter. Not only that, I’ve never missed a week.

I’m proud of the fact that I’ve never missed a week. I’m a firm believer that consistency is important. Maybe you don’t care that I miss a week here and there but I do. This goes for podcasts as well.

For those of you that are good at maths and calendaring, if nothing derails me, I’ll write my 104th newsletter in April, which will be my second anniversary. It’s hard for me to fathom, especially as I look back at my first edition.

So thanks to all you long time readers and the newcomers. I appreciate you all for sticking around.

So Good, So Good, So Good

The Skimmer’s Hook: Two accidents. More championships.

Listen if you like: Feel Good Stories, Coming Back

Imagine that your young life is going along pretty well. You’re 18, you’re an outstanding baseball player and you’ve got your life ahead of you. And then it all gets taken away from you by a terrorizing and strange car accident. How would you deal with it?

David Mellor started overcoming the odds and it’s a feel-good story until it isn’t. A second even stranger terrorizing car accident almost kills him.

But he overcomes again and makes it to the Major Leagues. Maybe not in the way he had once hoped as a kid but he can say he was a part of multiple World Series championships with his hometown team, nonetheless.

Podcast: Back From Broken - David Mellor (31 mins)

Zero is Better Than Five

The Skimmer’s Hook: If you run a team, there’s a chance it’s a dysfunctional one. Here are ways to overcome one.

Listen if you like: Teams, Success, Business

This episode is a rare recommendation for me. It’s about business AND books.

Many years ago, I read my favorite business book ever. That’s a low bar since I don’t read books but The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team is, dare I say it, a fun read. It’s a business book written in parable form. I'm one of the slowest readers you know and I blew through it in an afternoon.

Through the magic of podcasts, if you don’t want to read how teams can overcome dysfunction, just listen to this interview with the author. I’ll be honest; it’s been such a long time since I read that book that this was a great refresher on ways to get your team to succeed.

Podcast: Smart Passive Income - The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team with Patrick Lencioni (47 mins)

3 In 1

The Skimmer’s Hook: Three diverse sports-related stories.

Listen if you like: College Football, Basketball, Olympics

This relatively new podcast gives you three different sports stories each week. If you like sports, chances are one of them is going to intrigue you. If you really like sports, chances are they all will.

In this episode, we find out about:
  • how RECENTLY the Texas Longhorns’ football team fielded a white-only team and;
  • why you would’ve HATED watching this high-school basketball game and;
  • the story of a 37-YEAR OLD MOTHER who qualified for the Olympic marathon.

Podcast: Only A Game - Texas Football’s Long Road To Integration, HS Hoops Stalemate, Olympic Qualifier Upset (48 mins)

Extra Hot Sauce

Not much here because I listened to a crapload of trailers. I don't usually do that but there are so many new shows or new seasons of shows that just came out that intrigued me. I already know several of them will be in this newsletter soon.

Even if you are a fan of Everything Is Alive and Richard's Famous Food Podcast (both of which I've recommended in the past), this episode will make your head spin a bit. (20 mins)

I finally broke down and ranted in my journal
